Abstract The forest cover of Northern Europe has been steadily expanding during the last 120 years. More terrestrial vegetation and carbon fixation leads to more export surface waters. This may cause freshwater browning, as degraded plant‐litter ends up chromophoric (colored) dissolved organic matter. Although most ultimately drains coastal waters, link between browning water darkening is poorly understood. Here, we explore this relationship through a combination centennial records clarity, contemporary optical measurements in lakes well an ocean drift model. We suggest clarity Baltic, Kattegat, Skagerrak Sea show how brown‐colored from European catchments can dictate across thousands kilometers, Baltic Barents Sea.

Browning of freshwaters, mainly caused by increased terrestrial organic carbon loading, has been widely studied during the last decades. However, there are still uncertainties regarding both extent browning in different aquatic ecosystems and actual importance driving forces mechanisms. To refine understanding causes its temporal variation, we gathered a comprehensive dataset including 746 Finnish water quality monitoring stations representing various waterbody types: streams, rivers, lakes, coastal waters. Monotonic trend analyses revealed that TOC concentrations all types study period from 1990 to 2020, whereas non-linear trends indicated upward have substantially decreased since mid-2000s. despite levelling off, also decreases at only few stations. Abstract Human activities threaten the integrity of watersheds. We aimed to investigate impact land use on water quality, adopting a multiscale approach. collected samples from twelve streams in Southern Brazil and conducted limnological analyses (physical, chemical, biological) during dry season. used quality index based standards Canada Brazil. Research in the field of sediment geochemistry suggests potential linkages between catchment processes (land use), internal phosphorus (P) loading and lake water quality, but evidence is still poorly quantified due to a limited amount data. Here we address issues based on comprehensive data set from 27 lakes southern Finland. Specifically, aimed at: 1) elucidating factors behind spatial variations geochemistry; 2) assessing impact diagenetic transformation P regeneration across changes vertical distribution components; 3) exploring role forms (IL), 4) determining IL quality. The relationship concentration area percentage (FA%) was statistically significant (mainly eutrophic) with catchments that included more than 10 % fields. We found iron-bound (Fe-P) increased increasing FA%, which agrees high expected losses cultivated areas. Additionally, populated areas pool Fe-P. Internal significantly positively related both Fe-P organic (Org-P). However, Org-P not (as third predictor) models had trophic state variable as first predictor second predictor. Further, profiles components indicated transformations long-term release, especially deeper maximum depth longer residence time. Finally, correlated quality variables including phytoplankton biomass, its proportion cyanobacteria, chlorophyll index. Our findings suggest reduction will decrease loads increase through reduced

Abstract Owing to the rapid progress of high‐throughput sequencing technologies, microbial assemblages have gained growing interest in environmental impact assessment. However, research on community responses, particularly those benthic biofilm, browning (increased concentrations dissolved organic carbon [DOC]), is scarce. We used data from 55 boreal streams examine if biofilm bacterial communities exhibit changes diversity and composition along a gradient (3.6–27 mg DOC L −1 ). Species richness increased slightly with increasing DOC, whereas changed markedly across gradient, especially active community. Pseudomonadota Bacteroidota were overall dominant phyla. Abstract Boreal headwater streams are vital for forest biodiversity and larger water bodies but face challenges from management. Understanding owner’s views is key effective Our research surveys family owners to explore: (1) their perception of stream value, (2) factors driving willingness protect streams, (3) if motivations ownership vary by residence. Most motivated recreation. Those living far forests prioritize landscape, heritage, more than nearby residents. While recognize the importance protection, this does not always influence management choices. Owners who familiar with link between health willing logging impacts. Abstract There is growing awareness of the importance cross-boundary energy and nutrient transfers between adjacent ecosystems. Lake ecosystems receive inputs terrestrial organic matter that microbes can make available to higher level consumers. However, how environmental drivers influence this support benthic pelagic consumers at multiple trophic levels remains underexplored. Using hydrogen stable isotopes as a tracer matter, we find large variation in aquatic (i.e., consumer allochthony) among 35 boreal lakes. Of 19 different organisms, show highest allochthony. Consumer allochthony decreases along an gradient from forested agricultural catchments, likely due shifts origin nature lake matter. Our results demonstrate cross-ecosystem transfer community dynamics recipient ecosystems, with anthropogenic management donor affecting structure function food webs
