Protected natural forests are critical for biodiversity conservation, but they threatened by pervasive drivers of change that may not be mitigated legal protection. Selective herbivory non-native or hyper-abundant browsing mammals can affect forest composition and structure suppressing palatable species facilitating avoided species. Impacts severe, especially on islands, like Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), which historically lacked herbivorous mammals. We used a national network permanent plots with 12-year record stem census data to determine how species-level dietary preference site-level abundance (possums ungulates) were associated mortality rates recruitment into 2.5 cm diameter class among common tree in different levels National parks (NPs) had higher protection lower mammal indices than non-national (NNPs) across both there 1702 live stems possums ungulates recorded when first measured 1502 the latest measurements. Mortality these exceeded their NPs NNPs. The total population was stable, while most decline, some herbivores growing populations, exceeding mortality. At current abundance, driving significant compositional shifts populations Long-term (decadal) suppression is needed preserve ecological integrity NZ's protected forests.
