In this paper we ask: why do people in rural agrarian communities facing increasing migration pressures from changing climatic conditions, stay? We aim to understand stay, who stays, what are the impacts of on those and their needs for adaptation? study a population not migrate Himalayan Uttarakhand, India, despite livelihoods being already severely disrupted by climate change high outmigration has led abandoned so-called 'ghost villages'. Semi-structured interviews (n = 72) were held with affected communities, experts, policymakers. Results show that motivations immobility shaped place attachment; place-based resource advantages; social milieu; dependence subsistence agriculture gender roles. find experiences differentiated gender, age situ resources. Those stay negatively impacted via loss labour agriculture, changes size composition, community, addition negative change. Our results likely relevant global scale, other smallholder risks. These populations will need gender-sensitive support adapt place.

This article draws from the expanding field of climate mobilities, which explores nexus between change, environmental conditions and (im)mobility based on 'mobilities paradigm'. Environmental hazards collide with transportation infrastructures, for instance through adverse effects floods, heat waves, ice thawing roads, may disrupt or hamper everyday mobility. Frequent disaster-induced mobility impairments render individuals unable to commute places decrease their socioeconomic opportunities. Emphasising material aspects this paper argues that an analysis systems helps develop a deeper understanding inequalities injustices in context risk change. Sheller's justice perspective is taken as way critically address disruptions reflect interconnection different patterns. Empirically, case-study Tajikistan's Bartang Valley, where reduce residents' capacities circulate access food markets, healthcare facilities, job Overall, invitation fields mobilities consider impacts matter, things enable human (im)mobility.

While stories of 'climate migrants' regularly make the news, local perspectives often paint a different picture migration motivations. Based on case 'Chile's first climate from Monte Patria, an increasingly drought-affected rural municipality characterised by its agricultural economy, this article argues that mobilities under change need to be understood through power-sensitive approach analysing both perceptions environmental changes and power relations extending beyond case-study level. Through combination with political ecology change, studies how (a) precipitation deficits are translated into locally perceivable effects Chilean water distribution system, (b) these impact socio-economic groups differentially, (c) what options – including (labour) locals perceive have for responding. Ethnographic fieldwork in 39 semi-structured interviews 11 follow-alongs, has shown uneven resource access, limited bargaining perceived impossibility earn sufficient income economy considered as more important reasons engaging than considerations about (adaptation). As prolonged droughts aggravate existing structural economic insecurity livelihoods, creating situation which staying is difficult, participation pre-established labour mobility patterns directed outside normal potentially positive household-level response. The concludes insights can serve guide adaptation policy-making attuned importance redistribution.
