Sea-level
rise
is
accelerating
globally
and
will
continue
for
centuries
under
all
shared
socioeconomic
pathways.
Although
sea-level
a
global
issue,
its
impacts
manifest
heterogeneously
at
the
local
scale,
with
some
coastal
communities
infrastructure
considerably
more
vulnerable
than
others.
Aotearoa
New
Zealand
poorly
prepared
to
deal
impacts,
places
are
already
approaching
limits
of
adaptation,
short
relocation.
Maladaptive
choices
threaten
Aotearoa’s
ongoing
ability
adapt
going
forward.
Development
climate-resilient
pathways
requires
an
immediate
adoption
non-partisan,
long-term,
systemscale
approaches
governance
decision
making
(from
national),
that
integrate
effective
adaptation
emissions
mitigation.
This
also
proactive
collective
action
underpinned
by
indigenous
actionable
knowledge
(e.g.,
NZ
SeaRise
projections)
designed
our
unique
circumstances.
There
still
time
put
in
place
sustainable,
equitable
solutions,
but
funding
models
need
urgent
attention.

The
extent
and
timescale
of
climate
change
impacts
remain
uncertain,
including
global
temperature
increase,
sea
level
rise,
more
frequent
intense
extreme
events.
Uncertainties
are
compounded
by
cascading
effects.
Nevertheless,
decision-makers
must
take
action.
Adaptation
pathways,
an
approach
for
developing
dynamic
adaptive
policymaking,
widely
considered
suitable
planning
urban
or
regional
adaptation,
but
often
lack
integration
measures
disaster
risk
management.
This
article
emphasizes
the
need
to
strengthen
Pathways
bringing
together
explicitly
slow-onset
sudden
disasters
within
framework
Resilience
Pathways.
It
explores
key
features
Pathways—such
as
thresholds,
performance
assessments,
visual
tools—to
enhance
their
capacity
address
events
foster
Climate
Change
Disaster
Risk
Management.

There
is
a
climate
change
adaptation
implementation
gap.
We
have
information
about
the
likely
impacts
and
implications,
but
concrete
pre-emptive
action
elusive.
Key
to
addressing
this
are
alternative
planning
approaches
that
enable
decision
makers
anticipate
design
alternate
pathways
depending
on
how
conditions
change,
in
time
for
actions
be
implemented.
Over
last
ten
years,
dynamic
adaptive
(DAPP)
has
been
applied
Aotearoa
New
Zealand
(A-NZ)
assist
such
circumstances.
Pathways
now
diverse
settings
motivated
use
development
of
complementary
methods
tools
evaluating
options
pathways.
Different
governance
engagement
models
emerged,
tailored
with
different
communities.
DAPP
research
practice
A-NZ
advanced
monitoring
systems,
signals
triggers,
staging
managed
retreat
over
time,
serious
games
prime
dealing
uncertainty.
Māori
(the
Indigenous
people
A-NZ)
worldviews,
knowledge
values
intersected
informed
applications,
significant
untapped
opportunities
exist.
This
paper
presents
lessons
learned
from
these
applications
further
needed.
Opportunities
supporting
extending
process
making
through
governance,
indigenous
suggested.

The
collision
of
climate
impacts
with
forced
displacement
and
conflict
renders
efforts
to
promote
peace
development
particularly
challenging.
Most
the
academic
literature
date
has
focused
on
exploring
predicting
causal
links
between
change,
conflict,
displacement.
Much
less
attention
been
paid
need
inform
actual
policy
interventions
responses,
support
climate-resilient
development.
Here,
we
address
this
gap
develop
a
decision
framework
long-term
responses
in
contexts
affected
by
Building
upon
previous
World
Bank
reports
authors’
professional
experience,
suggest
that
focus
pathways
can
help
long-term,
response
displacement,
challenges.
Pathways
capture
sequence
are
required
reduce
risks
They
also
offer
an
opportunity
for
aligning
change
adaptation
interventions,
such
as
water
storage
or
flood
embankments,
peacebuilding
stabilization
initiatives.
Case
studies
from
Lebanon
South
Sudan
discussed
illustrate
approach
