Microplastic pollution represents a significant environmental challenge due to its persistence and role as vector for harmful contaminants. Conventional mitigation strategies, such filtration, oxidative degradation, microbial treatments, often exhibit limitations in efficiency, scalability, or result the generation of secondary pollutants. This review examines emerging potential geopolymers sustainable materials microplastic remediation. Owing their high porosity, chemical stability, tunable surface chemistry, regenerative properties, demonstrate considerable promise both adsorbents membrane materials. Extensive research has validated efficacy removal various contaminants, including heavy metals organic For example, fly ash-based modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) achieved 98.2% efficiency anionic acid blue 185 (AB185), while porous amorphous synthesized from ash iron ore tailings exhibited copper (Cu2+) uptake capacity 113.41 mg/g at 40 °C. These findings underscore versatility complex wastewater treatment applications. To date, only one direct study explored geopolymer application removal, demonstrating that silane-modified superhydrophobic foam up 99% polyethylene microspheres wastewater. While this highlights feasibility geopolymer-based remediation, dedicated area remains sparse. consolidates existing knowledge on interactions other pollutants inform mechanisms By drawing parallels between pollutants, work identifies transferable principles outlines gaps necessary advance solutions pollution. Overall, affirm geopolymers' transformative addressing contamination, underscoring urgent need further experimental field-based studies domain.
