To prevent the invasion of alien species, International Maritime Organization and United States Costal Guard require that a ballast water management system (BWMS) be installed on ships to treat before discharging it. BWMS technologies use active substances, which create disinfection by-products (DBPs) during treatment. This study compared characteristics DBPs generated in treatment commercial glucose with those algal organic matter (AOM) derived from field-collected phytoplankton using NaOCl as substance. During AOM, greater variety higher concentrations were than for glucose. For AOM freshwater, bromoform dibromoacetic acid dominant because bromine ions present phytoplankton. glucose, ratio predicted environmental concentration no-effect dibromoacetonitrile chloropicrin exceeded 1, indicating potential risk. Whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing showed chronic total DBP highest marine AOM. In addition, results WET suggested haloacetic acids (HAAs) haloacetonitriles (HANs) important indicators evaluation Therefore, evaluate risk international ports where outbreaks frequently occur, it is monitor not only but also HAA HAN concentrations.

Transporting non-native species in ballast tanks has been a major challenge over the years. The number of surviving host environment is quite small compared to those all introduced. However, even single can cause great harm environment, economy, and public health. Ballast water treatment issues are difficult complex as performance highly affected by variable characteristics seawater. In addition, targeted organisms wide spectrum. International Convention on Control Management Ship Water Sediments requires ships manage with Type Approved System compliance discharge standard defined Convention. Systems Approval (G8) Guide was revised 2016 accepted BWMS Code (Ballast Code) mandatory regime 2018. According implementation schedule this approval regime, management system installed or after 28 October 2020 must be type-approved according IMO’s G8 requirements. Several systems use different methods their limitations. problem does not seem end only installation ships. Although substantial international progress made (both technically regulatory), there still several regarding effectiveness, monitoring, environment.

As a country that has more than half of the country's total territorial waters, Indonesia is highly dependent on shipping activities. Therefore, knowledge policy updates for each ship from IMO must also be taken into account, one which regarding Ballast Water Management System, requires every to installed with Treatment System in order achieve goal green environment voyage areas by inhibiting spread microorganisms endanger area caused ballast water. This regulatory update then creates problems, especially ships have been operating long time, because comply standards D-1 and D-2 according time specified convention. So, this review article will discuss solution issues retrofitting water treatment systems as addition new system existing sailed pay attention conceptual aspects consisting considerations operations find type suits ship's needs analyzing advantages disadvantages technology method. There consideration several stages are commonly used determine treatment, starting assessment planning requirements, selection space, compliance BWMS regulations, method, engineering drawing, installation planning, commissioning. Apart that, related innovation were discussed, including development alternative technology, potential efficiency both operational safety standards. Based research developments, ultra-violet (UV) well known common beside electrolysis treatment. Introduction: Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) generated during ballast water treatment using active substances have gained increasing interest owing to their potential impact on the marine environment. This study aimed investigate occurrence and distribution of DBPs, which are secondary products electrolysis, land-based tests. Methods: DBP levels were compared under various conditions, including chloride bromide ion compositions, hold time, organic matter-related parameters. Results: After trihalomethane (THM) haloacetic acid (HAA) increased from day 0 5 all salinities, whereas haloacetonitrile (HAN) level decreased. THMs found be most dominant group, followed by HAAs HANs. In brackish water, brominated DBPs high ions, while chlorinated concentrations relatively in fresh water. Discussion: specific ultraviolet absorption treated was >4, indicating a likelihood generating carbonaceous such as HAA. These findings contribute better understanding general mechanisms through physicochemical factors affect formation electrolysis is valuable addressing issues related release into environment, an emerging environmental concern.
