An unprecedented increase in the use of disinfection products triggered by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is resulting aggravating environmental loads disinfectants as emerging contaminants, which has been considered a cause for worldwide secondary disasters. This review analyzed literature published last decade about occurrence, bioaccumulation, and possible risks benzalkonium chlorides (BKCs) contaminants. Results indicated that BKCs globally occurred municipal wastewater, surface water, groundwater, reclaimed sludge, sediment, soil, roof runoff, residential dust samples across 13 countries. The maximum residual levels 30 mg/L 421 μg/g were reported water solid samples, respectively. Emerging evidences suggested bioaccumulation plants, even perhaps humans. Environmentally relevant concentrations exert potential adverse impacts on aquatic terrestrial species, including genotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, behavioural effects neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption reproductive impairment, phytotoxicity, etc. Given intrinsic biocidal preservative properties disinfectants, inductive environment terms resistance imbalance microorganisms have paid special attention. Considering similarities to pharmaceuticals, from perspective ecopharmacovigilance (EPV), well-established strategy pharmaceutical we control BKC pollution case, provide some recommendations employing EPV measures manage posed disinfectant

The understanding of antibiotic resistance, one the major health threats our time, is mostly based on dated and incomplete notions, especially in clinical contexts. “canonical” mechanisms action pharmacodynamics antibiotics, as well methods used to assess their activity upon bacteria, have not changed decades; same applies definition, acquisition, selective pressures, drivers resistance. As a consequence, strategies improve usage overcome resistance ultimately failed. This review gathers most “non-canonical” notions antibiotics resistance: from alternative limitations susceptibility testing wide variety lateral gene transfer mechanisms, ubiquity, societal factors maintaining Only by having “big picture” view problem can adequate harness be devised. These must global, addressing many aspects that drive increasing prevalence resistant bacteria aside use antibiotics.

The role of biocides in the spread antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been addressed but only a few studies focus on impact surfactants microbial diversity and AMR, although they are common constituents cleaners, disinfectants, personal care products thus released into environment large quantities. In this study, we used static ex situ biofilm model to examine development four biofilms exposed analyzed for their prevalence class I integrons as proxy overall abundance AMR sample. We furthermore determined shift bacterial community composition by high-resolution melt analysis 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequencing. Depending initial intrinsic respective biofilm, benzalkonium chloride, alkylbenzene sulfonate, cocamidopropyl betaine increased its up 6.5× average. For fatty alcohol ethoxylate biosurfactants sophorolipid rhamnolipid, mean increase did not exceed 2.5-fold. Across all surfactants, was accompanied composition. Especially betaine, sulfonate changed communities, while ethoxylate, sophorolipid, rhamnolipid had lower effect

ABSTRACT Biocides are used to control microorganisms across different applications, but emerging resistance may pose risks for those applications. Resistance biocides has commonly been studied using adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) experiments with growth at subinhibitory concentrations linked serial subculturing. It shown recently that Escherichia coli adapts repeated lethal stress imposed by the biocide benzalkonium chloride (BAC) increased survival (i.e., tolerance) and not evolving ability grow resistance). Here, we investigate contributions of tolerance as opposed outcome ALE E. exposed BAC. We find BAC close half maximal effective concentration (EC 50 , 4.36 μg mL −1 ) show initial killing (~40%) before population resumes growth. This indicates cells face a two‐fold selection pressure: To disentangle effects both pressures, conducted two experiments: (i) one continued EC during (ii) another no Phenotypic characterization adapted populations showed higher was only selected when present Whole genome sequencing revealed distinct differences in mutated genes treatments. Treatments selecting survival‐only led mutations metabolic regulation ( cyaA cellular structure (flagella fliJ ), while treatments related response hslO tufA ). Our results demonstrate subculture an antimicrobial can select survival. finding implications design assess antimicrobials scenarios such disinfection, preservation, environmental pollution.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an extensive use of surfactants in the form disinfectants, surface cleaners, sanitisers and shower gels for hygiene. Considering their environmental impact, it becomes essential keep track emitted by cleansers, cosmetics, hygiene products. Linear alkyl benzenes (LABs) are discharged substantially into environment as a by-product hazardous linear benzene sulphonate (LAS), anionic surfactant widely used detergent manufacture. Many signals linked characteristic fragments LABs, C7H7+ (mass 91.05) have been identified high-resolution orbitrap mass spectroscopy. Precise qualitative quantitative predictions can only facilitate correct remedial methods be applied eradication. Thus, is crucial detect qualitatively quantitatively water reservoirs. current review focuses on various analytical approaches detecting surrounding reservoirs, which explored mainly wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Based recent developments, techniques like Spectroscopy, Chromatography, Potentiometry, Titrimetry, Electrophoresis discussed. This manuscript highlights specific regularly employed analysis, including advantages, disadvantages, problems associated with detection surfactants. article emphasises need automated yet simple analysis aiding choosing method.
