Cornea tissue engineering is strictly dependent on the development of biomaterials that fulfill strict biocompatibility, biomechanical, and optical requirements this organ. In work, we generated novel from squid gladius (SG), their application in cornea was evaluated. Results revealed native SG (N-SG) biocompatible laboratory animals, although a local inflammatory reaction driven by material. Cellularized (C-SG) demonstrated provides an adequate substrate for cell attachment growth, corneal epithelial cells cultured biomaterial were able to express crystallin alpha, marker type cells. Biomechanical analyses showed N-SG have higher Young modulus lower traction deformation than control corneas (CTR), C-SG similar CTR. Analysis properties these samples diffuse transmittance CTR, with reflectance showing opposite behavior. These results confirm putative usefulness abundant marine-derived can be obtained as byproduct fishing industry.
