Exposure of Carboniferous Granitoids on Triassic–Jurassic Seashores in the Western Caucasus: A Stratigraphical Review

Granitoids
are
known
to
crop
out
on
ancient
seashores,
but
the
related
geological
evidence
remains
limited.
The
information
from
Western
Caucasus
sheds
light
stratigraphical
distribution
of
coarse
siliciclastic
beds
associated
with
late
Carboniferous
granitoids
Dakh,
Rafabgo,
and
Sakhray
crystalline
massifs.
For
purposes
this
study,
available
was
reviewed
verified
against
modern
scales.
It
is
established
that
considered
sisliciclastic
occur
at
five
levels
Triassic–Jurassic
succession.
A
rocky
seashore
granitoid
exposures
existed
for
a
short
time
around
probably
Rufabgo
massifs
very
beginning
Triassic.
Dakh
Massif
possessed
such
shore
twice
(at
least),
i.e.,
in
Norian–Rhaetian
Early
Toarcian.
However,
it
cannot
be
excluded
shores
persisted
there
>50
Ma.
Generally,
provides
an
example
Mesozoic
seashores
adds
knowledge
global
Triassic
Jurassic
periods.

Territorial
inventories
of
geosites
remain
on
the
international
agenda,
and
they
can
help
in
acquiring
information
for
solving
pure
geological
research
tasks.
New
field
investigations
northern
part
Mountainous
Adygeya
(geoheritage-rich
territory
western
Greater
Caucasus)
permitted
us
to
extend
our
knowledge
its
geosites.
Five
were
described
qualitatively
assessed
semi-quantitatively,
namely
Polkovnitskaya
River
Valley
(ammonite-bearing
concretions
Aptian
glauconitic
sandstones),
Little
Khadzhokh
(Aptian
sandstones
with
fossils
trace
fossils),
Shakhan
Middle
(Upper
Jurassic
variegated
siliciclastics,
Hauterivian
fluvial
deltaic
sandstones,
mixed
ancient
modern
clastic
material),
Big
Khadzhoh
Waterfall
(splendid
waterfall
exposures
locally
folded
Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian
limestones),
Verblyud
Mountain
(small,
camel-shaped
cuesta’s
remnant).
They
ranked
nationally
(one
geosite),
regionally
(three
geosites),
geosite).
Close
examination
considered
register
peculiarities
(changes
dip
direction
between
sedimentary
packages),
which
indicate
tectonic
activity
across
Jurassic–Cretaceous
transition.
Additionally,
complex
accessibility
patterns
established
some
geosites,
these
should
be
addressed
further
refinements
semi-quantitative
approaches
geosite
assessment.
