Self-determination theory (SDT), a foundational psychological framework, has emerged as pivotal lens through which to understand the dynamics of human-computer interaction (HCI) and Games User Research (GUR). Central SDT is conceptualization intrinsic motivation, characterized by voluntary behaviors arising fro personal interest. An established method for assessing motivation across various contexts employment Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI). This study presents meticulous translation cross-cultural adaptation 22-item version IMI, known Task Evaluation Questionnaire, into Brazilian Portuguese (IMI Teq Br). The process adhered comprehensive methodology outlined Beaton, encompassing Translation, Synthesis, Back-translation, Expert Committee review, Pre-testing phases. Statistical analyses, including Student’s T-test independent samples, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory (CFA), were conducted ensure validity reliability translated instrument. Our findings corroborate robustness adapted questionnaire, affirming its suitability use within Portuguese-speaking context. paper meticulously delineates resultant statistical outcomes, offering insights significance IMI Br engagement research grounded in principles. Abstract Although competition is a common feature of digital games, nuances when and why aspects influence players' motivation well-being have been surprisingly underexplored, especially through the lens self-determination theory (SDT). In this critical review, we: (1) describe how mini-theory SDT, cognitive evaluation (CET), can help predict will alternatively satisfy or frustrate basic psychological needs in games with downstream effects on well-being; (2) apply Motivation, Engagement Thriving User Experience (METUX) model to outline ways at multiple levels; (3) prioritize future research directions. Finally, we argue that given their diversity, adaptability massive reach, represent an powerful context for studying competition, well-being. Research Highlights This review integrates (SDT)-guided models related HCI, sports psychology supportive design advance understanding games. Introduces new taxonomy relevant SDT including macro-level categories, general elements specific features. Presents gaming (CET) linking different need satisfaction frustration, motivation, health Applying METUX model, map out researchers game makers think about levels spheres influence. Prioritizes directions research, specifically experimentally manipulating feedback representations self others

Motivation and autonomy are fundamental concepts in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), yet User Experience (UX) research they have remained surprisingly peripheral. We draw on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to analyse autonomous non-autonomous patterns of motivation 497 interaction experiences. Using latent profile analysis, we identify 5 distinct technology use -- "motivational profiles" associated with significant differences need satisfaction, affect, usability. Users' descriptions these experiences also reveal qualitative between profiles: from intentional, purposive engagement, compulsive which users themselves consider unhealthy. Our results complicate exclusively positive notions intrinsic motivation, clarify how extrinsic can contribute UX. Based findings open questions for UX SDT, addressing "hedonic amotivation" negative activities intrinsically motivated but not otherwise valued "design internalisation" scaffolding healthy sustainable engagement over time.

Self-determination theory (SDT), a psychological of human motivation, is prominent paradigm in human–computer interaction (HCI) research on games. However, our prior literature review observed trend towards shallow applications the theory. This follow-up work takes broader view—examining SDT scholarship games, wider corpus SDT-based HCI games (N = 259), and perspectives from industry practitioner conference—to help explain current SDT. Our findings suggest that perfunctory originate part within which itself exhibits limited engagement with theoretical tenets. Against this backdrop, we unpack popularity identify conditions underlying theory’s use as an oft-unquestioned paradigm. Finally, outline avenues for more productive SDT-informed consider ways intentional practices HCI.

Aspects of eudaimonic well-being are already significant in Player Experience evaluation within Games User Research. To accurately assess how a player's is influenced by their gaming experience, it crucial to use not only self-report instruments, which rely on users' ability recall and articulate experiences, but also psychophysiological measures that can offer more reliable nuanced data. Although further research needed clarify physiological correspond PX, this position paper argues such understanding essential advance beyond superficial PX explore games resonate with players deeper level.
