Abstract
Although
competition
is
a
common
feature
of
digital
games,
nuances
when
and
why
aspects
influence
players'
motivation
well-being
have
been
surprisingly
underexplored,
especially
through
the
lens
self-determination
theory
(SDT).
In
this
critical
review,
we:
(1)
describe
how
mini-theory
SDT,
cognitive
evaluation
(CET),
can
help
predict
will
alternatively
satisfy
or
frustrate
basic
psychological
needs
in
games
with
downstream
effects
on
well-being;
(2)
apply
Motivation,
Engagement
Thriving
User
Experience
(METUX)
model
to
outline
ways
at
multiple
levels;
(3)
prioritize
future
research
directions.
Finally,
we
argue
that
given
their
diversity,
adaptability
massive
reach,
represent
an
powerful
context
for
studying
competition,
well-being.

Beyond Intrinsic Motivation: The Role of Autonomous Motivation in User Experience

Motivation
and
autonomy
are
fundamental
concepts
in
Human-Computer
Interaction
(HCI),
yet
User
Experience
(UX)
research
they
have
remained
surprisingly
peripheral.
We
draw
on
Self-Determination
Theory
(SDT)
to
analyse
autonomous
non-autonomous
patterns
of
motivation
497
interaction
experiences.
Using
latent
profile
analysis,
we
identify
5
distinct
technology
use
--
"motivational
profiles"
associated
with
significant
differences
need
satisfaction,
affect,
usability.
Users'
descriptions
these
experiences
also
reveal
qualitative
between
profiles:
from
intentional,
purposive
engagement,
compulsive
which
users
themselves
consider
unhealthy.
Our
results
complicate
exclusively
positive
notions
intrinsic
motivation,
clarify
how
extrinsic
can
contribute
UX.
Based
findings
open
questions
for
UX
SDT,
addressing
"hedonic
amotivation"
negative
activities
intrinsically
motivated
but
not
otherwise
valued
"design
internalisation"
scaffolding
healthy
sustainable
engagement
over
time.

Self-determination
theory

review

shallow
applications

follow-up

broader
view—examining
SDT

HCI

259),
and
perspectives
from
industry
practitioner
conference—to
help
explain
current
SDT.
Our
findings
suggest
that
perfunctory
originate
part
within
which
itself
exhibits
limited
engagement
with
theoretical
tenets.
Against
this
backdrop,
we
unpack
popularity
identify
conditions
underlying
theory’s
use
as
an
oft-unquestioned
paradigm.
Finally,
outline
avenues
for
more
productive
SDT-informed
consider
ways
intentional
practices
HCI.
