Purpose Drawing upon compensatory ethics theory, this study explored the underlying mechanisms through which gossipers engaged in helping behavior as a form of compensation after initiating negative workplace gossip. Design/methodology/approach Through two-wave field 394 Chinese employees, tests theoretical hypotheses using path analysis and bootstrapping methods. Findings The findings suggested that gossip positively influenced gossipers’ moral self-image guilt. Moreover, reflectiveness not only moderated impacts on guilt but also mediating effects relationship between behavior. Originality/value These results enrich research gossip, offer new perspectives for studying phenomenon provide basis decision-making reference management practices.
