Ammonia, with its high hydrogen content, serves as an efficient energy carrier and a potential replacement for traditional fossil fuels in achieving the United Nations' carbon neutrality goal. It also offers significant advantages over production, storage, transportation. Extensive research has been conducted on use of ammonia transportation power generation, collectively referred to combustion (AFC). However, there remains lack systematic review this area, which study aims address. Using bibliometric techniques, data from publications spanning 2000 2024 were gathered Web Science database, revealing that publication numbers remained low until 2015 but increased significantly 2016 onward. This systematically analyzes numerical experimental studies characteristics technologies across last forty years. The primary challenges identified AFC include prolonged ignition delay, laminar burning velocity, NOx emissions. To mitigate these challenges, various such fuel blending auxiliary have proposed. highlighted concerning technology readiness levels AFC. address gap, comprehensive examination applications internal engines, marine aircraft gas turbines generation was undertaken. evaluation encompassed objectives, gaps, methods enhancing performance, assessments levels. findings investigation make substantial contributions field, offering valuable insights into prospects sustainable combustion.
