With the issue of energy shortages becoming increasingly serious, need to shift sustainable and clean sources has become urgent. However, due intermittent nature most renewable sources, developing underground hydrogen storage (UHS) systems as backup solutions offers a promising solution. The thick regionally extensive salt deposits in Unit B Southern Ontario, Canada, have demonstrated significant potential for supporting such systems. Based on stratigraphy statistics unit B, this study investigates feasibility stability caverns, focusing effects cavern shape, geometric parameters, operating pressures. Three shapes—cylindrical, cone-shaped, ellipsoid-shaped—were analyzed using numerical simulations. Results indicate that cylindrical caverns with diameter-to-height ratio 1.5 provide best balance between capacity structural stability, while ellipsoid-shaped offer reduced stress concentration but less space, posing practical challenges during leaching. results also optimal pressure range maintaining minimizing leakage lies 0.4 0.7 times vertical situ stress. Higher pressures increase lead greater stress, displacements, risks, lower leads internal extrusion tendency walls. Additionally, rate drops maximum working pressure, yet total mass keeps growing trend.

Water-soluble mining was invariably associated with surface subsidence, which in some cases escalated to the movement, deformation, and even collapse of overlying rock layers, triggering grave subsidence calamities. The caprock salt-bearing strata Longgui salt area closely adjacent third aquifer, mainly consisted fractured, porous, high-permeability materials such as mudstone conglomerates, rendering geological conditions highly complex. Years water-soluble had led significant area, a trend toward accelerated subsidence. In this study, were analyzed, through simulated experiments pillar dissolution mining, mechanisms examined. Over time, gradually perforated pillars caprock, ceasing support ultimately transforming small cavities into large single cavity. Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is considered to solve the intermittency problem of renewable energy. A geological assessment indicated that B unit Salina Group in Southern Ontario, Canada, most promising for UHS because it thickest and regionally extensive salt rock deposit. However, comprehensive knowledge potential sites overall volume remains undiscovered. This paper collected 1112 wells’ logging data assess geologic Lambton County. The characteristic analysis was conducted using high-frequency stratigraphic sequences interpretation. internal lithologies thicknesses were interpreted from 426 available wells. capacity caverns calculated simplified cylinder models. results indicate can be subdivided into three sequences, denoted as SQ1, SQ2, SQ3 subunits. To northwest, thicker deeper terms paleo-water depth, southeast, less deposited on paleo-highs. main range 20 30 m, 25 35 40 respectively. In conclusion, best subunit SQ3, with a secondary target being SQ2. factor impacting cavern high mud content, while meters-thick anhydrite developed towards base unit. underground 9.10 × 106 m3. Salt cavern storage, characterized by its safety, stability, large scale, economic viability, and efficiency, stands out as a cost-effective relatively secure method for large-scale petroleum reserves. This paper provides an overview of the current development status salt storage technologies both domestically internationally, analyzes advantageous conditions numerous challenges faced Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in China, forecasts trends this technology. The conclusions indicate that China possesses all necessary storage. In the current global energy sector where storage technology is highly regarded, development of crucial. Salt formations are commonly encountered during oil and gas drilling. Due to the rheological properties of salt rocks, casing collapse accidents happen frequently. Under action nonuniform geostress, failure has become an important influencing factor that restricts exploration development benefits deep ultra-deep wells. Casing stress in a period after well cementation formation Brazilian deepwater fields was analyzed. Results show geostress is instantaneously applied on cement sheath when completed then transferred casing. Stress inner wall grows with increase angle direction maximum horizontal principal it reaches minimum stress. As creep continues, casings gradually enlarges circumferential rings tends be uniform, which means weakens nonuniformity deformation. The pressure outer at first decrease as enlarges. reduces increasing thickness selected, strength improved increases. research results provide certain theoretical guidance for check engineering formations.
