Heterogeneous photocatalysis has emerged in recent years as a promising and sustainable decontamination method. However, several drawbacks limit the effective usage of this process up to date, such photocatalysts’ limited properties, difficulty modifying improving their well environmental impact cost associated with use metals on which conventional photocatalysts are based. Graphitic carbon nitride (gCN), new carbon-based photocatalyst, offers possibility easy modification improvement properties. There strategies improve properties these derivatives, increasing surface area (modifying morphology into 0D, 1D, 2D, or porous structures), absorption visible (doping), separation mobility photogenerated charges (introducing defects, vacancies, functional groups, doping). In review, compilation modifications, improvements its derivatives was carried out focus degradation emerging pollutants (EPs). The property modifications enhance behavior efficiency degradation, all cheaper more way. Thus, improved gCN offer real possibilities for upscaling heterogeneous photocatalytic processes an alternative decontaminating water bodies.
