Parasites
are
ubiquitous
in
grazing
equids,
but
most
commonly
cause
infection
without
manifestation
of
clinical
disease.
However,
the
potential
for
profound
and
severe
disease
syndromes
has
historically
prompted
widespread
adoption
preventative
control
measures.
With
increasing
development
anthelmintic
resistance,
such
measures
must
evolve
change
to
more
diagnostic-led,
evidence-based
programmes
that
consider
specific
epidemiology
each
target
parasite.
Through
a
background
changing
measures,
this
review
explores
equine
parasites
importance
both
past
present,
their
manifestations,
how
picture
common
may
future.

Over
the
preceding
decades,
widespread
dependence
on
anthelmintic
drugs
for
managing
nematodes
in
grazing
equids
has
given
rise
to
resistance
against
commonly
used
anthelmintics
various
countries.
This
study
explores
prevalence
of
across
44
horse
farms
Ireland.
Anthelmintic
efficacy
was
evaluated
through
fecal
egg
count
reduction
(FECR)
tests
employing
mini-FLOTAC
technique.
Resistance
benzimidazoles
identified
12
out
14
(FECR
range:
0.00%
86.2%).
Ivermectin
observed
two
farms,
one
with
an
FECR
80.70%
and
another
96.10%
(lower
95%
high
probability
density
interval
(HPD)
<90%,
11.70%).
On
remaining
six
ivermectin
still
exceeded
95%.
The
reduced
moxidectin
noted

86.90%

In
summary,

findings
emphasize
urgent
need
alternative
strategies
