Abstract Environmental plastic pollution comprises partially degraded particles representing a continuum of sizes, shapes, polymer types and chemical compositions. Owing to their potential for biological uptake, small microplastic (sMP; <100 μm) nanoplastics (NPs) are considered be risk organisms. Understanding how sMPs NPs behave in the environment, environmental matrices affect detection, is fundamental quantifying exposures, assessing hazards understanding these risks. For this purpose, high-quality, well-characterised environmentally relevant test reference materials crucial. The current lack sMP NP has resulted many studies applying commercially available spherical, homogenous monodisperse particles, typically produced specific purposes without relevance. There need test/reference fate effects assessments analytical protocol validation that more accurately represent present environment. To date, feasible methods producing sufficient quantities remain lacking. review provides an overview comparison methods, highlighting those show most promise with further development optimisation.

Tap water nano/microplastics (NMPs) escaping from centralized treatment systems are of increasing global concern, because they pose potential health risk to humans via consumption. Drinking boiled water, an ancient tradition in some Asian countries, is supposedly beneficial for human health, as boiling can remove chemicals and most biological substances. However, it remains unclear whether effective removing NMPs tap water. Herein we present evidence that polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene coprecipitate with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) incrustants upon boiling. Boiling hard (>120 mg L–1 CaCO3) at least 80% size between 0.1 150 μm. Elevated temperatures promote CaCO3 nucleation on NMPs, resulting the encapsulation aggregation within incrustants. This simple boiling-water strategy "decontaminate" household has harmlessly alleviating intake through

Micro and nanoplastics (MPs NPs, respectively) in agricultural soil ecosystems represent a pervasive global environmental concern, posing risks to biota, hence health food security. This review provides comprehensive current summary of the literature on sources properties MNPs ecosystems, methodology for isolation characterization recovered from soil, MNP surrogate materials that mimic size soil-borne MNPs, transport through matrix. Furthermore, this elucidates impacts crops microorganisms fauna. A significant source MPs is plasticulture, involving use mulch films other plastic-based implements provide several agronomic benefits specialty crop production, while include irrigation water fertilizer. Transgenerational nanoplastic toxicity could be detected in Caenorhabditis elegans after exposure at the parental generation (P0-G); however, underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. We aimed to examine role of germline nuclear hormone receptors (NHRs) controlling transgenerational polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) based on gene expression screening and functional analysis. Among NHR genes, daf-12, nhr-14, nhr-47 expressions were increased nhr-12 was decreased by PS-NPs (1 10 μg/L). alterations these four genes also induced RNAi caused resistance, whereas conferred susceptibility PS-NP toxicity. After exposure, ins-3, daf-28, ins-39 encoding insulin ligands, efn-3 Ephrin ligand, lin-44 Wnt as well their receptor (daf-2, vab-1, and/or mig-1), dysregulated nhr-47, nhr-12. Therefore, alteration certain NHRs mediate induction affecting secreted ligands offspring exposed organisms.

Photochemical weathering and eco-corona formation through natural organic matter (NOM) adsorption play vital roles in the aggregation tendencies of nanoplastics (NPs) aquatic environments. However, it remains unclear how photochemical alters patterns NOM conformation eco-corona, subsequently affecting NPs. This study examined effect Suwannee River on kinetics pristine photoaged polystyrene (PS) NPs monovalent electrolyte solutions. The results showed that influenced which, turn, determined NP stability presence NOM. Hydrophobic components predominantly bound to hydrophobic π–π interactions, extended hydrophilic segments water hindered via steric repulsion. Conversely, hydrogen bonding facilitated binding these multiple NPs, thereby destabilizing them polymer bridging. Additionally, stabilization destabilization capacities increased with its concentration molecular weight. These findings shed light role weathered offering new perspectives environmental colloidal chemistry fate complex

Microplastics (MPs) originate from industrial production of <1 mm polymeric particles and the progressive breakdown larger plastic debris. Their environmental behavior is governed by their interfacial properties, which dominate due to small size. This Perspective highlights complex surface chemistry MPs under stressors discusses how physical attributes like shape roughness could influence fate. We further identify wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) as critical hotspots for MP accumulation, where are inadvertently transferred sewage sludge reintroduced into environment. emphasize potential colloid science not only improve our fundamental understanding but also advance mitigation strategies in such WWTPs.
