Abstract
Environmental
plastic
pollution
comprises
partially
degraded
particles
representing
a
continuum
of
sizes,
shapes,
polymer
types
and
chemical
compositions.
Owing
to
their
potential
for
biological
uptake,
small
microplastic
(sMP;
<100
μm)
nanoplastics
(NPs)
are
considered
be
risk
organisms.
Understanding
how
sMPs
NPs
behave
in
the
environment,
environmental
matrices
affect
detection,
is
fundamental
quantifying
exposures,
assessing
hazards
understanding
these
risks.
For
this
purpose,
high-quality,
well-characterised
environmentally
relevant
test
reference
materials
crucial.
The
current
lack
sMP
NP
has
resulted
many
studies
applying
commercially
available
spherical,
homogenous
monodisperse
particles,
typically
produced
specific
purposes
without
relevance.
There
need
test/reference
fate
effects
assessments
analytical
protocol
validation
that
more
accurately
represent
present
environment.
To
date,
feasible
methods
producing
sufficient
quantities
remain
lacking.

overview

promise

further

nano/microplastics
(NMPs)
escaping
from
centralized
treatment
systems
are
of
increasing
global
concern,
because
they
pose
potential
health
risk
to
humans
via
consumption.
Drinking
boiled
water,
an
ancient
tradition
in
some
Asian
countries,
is
supposedly
beneficial
for
human
health,
as
boiling
can
remove
chemicals
and
most
biological
substances.
However,
it
remains
unclear
whether
effective
removing
NMPs
tap
water.
Herein
we
present
evidence
that
polystyrene,
polyethylene,
polypropylene
coprecipitate
with
calcium
carbonate
(CaCO3)
incrustants
upon
boiling.
Boiling
hard
(>120
mg
L–1
CaCO3)
at
least
80%
size
between
0.1
150
μm.
Elevated
temperatures
promote
CaCO3
nucleation
on
NMPs,
resulting
the
encapsulation
aggregation
within
incrustants.
This
simple
boiling-water

Micro
and
nanoplastics
(MPs
NPs,
respectively)
in
agricultural
soil
ecosystems
represent
a
pervasive
global
environmental
concern,
posing
risks
to
biota,
hence
health
food
security.
This
review
provides
comprehensive
current
summary
of
the
literature
on
sources
properties
MNPs
ecosystems,
methodology
for
isolation
characterization
recovered
from
soil,
MNP
surrogate
materials
that
mimic
size
soil-borne
MNPs,
transport
through
matrix.
Furthermore,
this
elucidates
impacts
crops
microorganisms
fauna.
A
significant
source
MPs
is
plasticulture,
involving
use
mulch
films
other
plastic-based
implements
provide
several
agronomic
benefits
specialty
crop
production,
while
include
irrigation
water
fertilizer.
Long-term
studies
are
needed
address
knowledge
gaps
formation,
surface
subsurface
transport,
including
derived
biodegradable
films,
which,
although
ultimately
undergoing
complete
mineralization,
will
reside
months.
Because
complexity
variability
difficulty
recovering
deeper
understanding
fundamental
relationships
between
MPs,
biota
microbiota,
ecotoxicological
effects
earthworms,
soil-dwelling
invertebrates,

nanoplastic

Photochemical
weathering
and
eco-corona
formation
through
natural
organic
matter
(NOM)
adsorption

aggregation
tendencies

nanoplastics
(NPs)
aquatic
