BACKGROUND Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling associated with high interference in people’s lives. However, patients OCD either do not seek help or delay seeking help. Research suggests that this could be explained by poor mental health literacy about the and stigma. Abstract Objectives We aimed to investigate the experience of obsessional intrusive thoughts (OITs) in a sample children aged 8 10 years old and test main tenets cognitive model OCD. Specifically, we assessed: (1) prevalence OITs experienced by young children; (2) their frequency content; (3) emotions they evoke; (4) reasons why are upsetting; (5) how appraised (6) what control strategies use. Methods Forty‐nine (28 girls, 21 boys; mean age 9.1 years) from community completed two self‐report questionnaires assessing anxiety obsessive–compulsive symptoms. Children were interviewed using Children's Anxious Thoughts Interview, which assessed experiences OITs. Results From 49 participants, 71.43% reported having at least one OIT. The most frequent contents related harm doubt. Of total sample, 28.6% OIT recently with moderate frequency; these participants higher interference, described feeling nervous anxious when experiencing OIT, rated as highly important distracting. frequently – suppression, distraction thought replacement. Conclusions Almost thirds findings this study provide preliminary support for application OCD children. Subtle differences previous research adults discussed.
