Abstract Sleep is crucial for physical and mental health, but traditional sleep quality assessment methods have limitations. This scoping review analyzes 35 articles from the past decade, evaluating 62 wearable setups with varying sensors, algorithms, features. Our analysis indicates a trend towards combining accelerometer photoplethysmography (PPG) data out-of-lab staging. Devices using only are effective sleep/wake detection fall short in identifying multiple stages, unlike those incorporating PPG signals. To enhance reliability of staging wearables, we propose five recommendations: (1) Algorithm validation equity, diversity, inclusion considerations, (2) Comparative performance commercial algorithms across (3) Exploration feature impacts on algorithm accuracy, (4) Consistent reporting metrics objective assessment, (5) Encouragement open-source classifier availability. Implementing these recommendations can improve accuracy solidifying their value research clinical settings.

To provide a comprehensive assessment of sleep state misperception in insomnia disorder (INS) and good sleepers (GS) by comparing recordings performed for one night in-lab (PSG review) during several nights at-home (actigraphy diaries). Fifty-seven INS 29 GS wore an actigraphy device filled diary two weeks at-home. They subsequently completed PSG recording review in-lab. Sleep perception index (subjective/objective × 100) onset latency (SOL), duration (TST) wake were computed compared between methods groups. displayed tendency to overestimate TST WASO but correctly perceived SOL. The degree was similar across within the group. In contrast, underestimated their overestimated SOL both at-home, yet severity larger than Finally, only while perceiving it While stable INS, dependent on method used. We found that exhibit opposite patterns misperception. methods, reliably detected INS. Our results highlight that, when assessing disorder, environment data collection should be carefully considered.
