Background: Exercise has been identified as an allied health strategy that can support the management of depression in older adults, yet relative effectiveness for different exercise modalities is unknown. To meet this gap knowledge, we present a systematic review and network meta-analysis randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to examine head-to-head aerobic, resistance, mind-body mitigate depressive symptoms adults aged ≥ 65 years. Methods: A PRISMA-NMA compliant was undertaken on RCTs from inception September 12th, 2019. PubMed, Web Science, CINAHL, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus were systematically searched eligible enrolling with mean age years, comparing one or more intervention arms, which used valid measures symptomology. Comparative evaluated using combine direct indirect evidence, controlling inherent variation trial control groups. Results: The included 82 RCTs, 69 meeting eligibility (n = 5,379 participants). Pooled analysis found each type be effective compared controls (Hedges’ g -0.27 -0.51). Relative comparisons statistically comparable between types: resistance versus aerobic -0.06, PrI -0.91, 0.79), -0.12, -0.95, 0.72), -0.90, 0.79). High levels compliance demonstrated treatment. Conclusions: Aerobic, demonstrate equivalence comparably encouraging treatment. These findings coalesce previous clinically depressed encourage personal preference when prescribing adults. Background: It is necessary to seek alternative therapies for depression, because side effects of medications lead poor adherence and some patients do not achieve a clinical treatment effect. Recently the role exercise as low-cost easy-to-use depression has gained attention with number studies showing that effective at reducing depressive symptoms improving body functions such cardiorespiratory system cognitive function. Because heterogeneity therapy programs, there no standardized unified program. Few have summarized specific properties programs (type, intensity, duration, frequency) prescriptions are mentioned in most articles. Aims: This study aimed investigate feasibility efficacy order appraise evidence outline accepted guidelines direct individualized plans based on their individual situations. Methods: A systematic review English language literature including papers published from 2010 present PubMed was performed. Given prescribing nearly 3 years treatments were first reviewed, comparing utilized. Conclusions: Exercise therapeutic all age groups (mostly 18-65 old), single therapy, an adjuvant or combination benefits comparable traditional depression. Moderate intensity enough reduce symptoms, but higher-dose better overall functioning. become more widely used its cardiovascular system, emotional state, systemic functions. Recommendations: Aerobic exercise/mind-body (3-5 sessions per week moderate lasting 4-16 weeks) recommended. Individualized protocols form group supervision increasing treatment.

Major depression shortens life while the effectiveness of frontline treatments remains modest. Exercise has been shown to be effective both in reducing mortality and treating symptoms major depression, but it is still underutilized clinical practice, possibly due prevalent misperceptions. For instance, a common misperception that exercise beneficial for mostly because its positive effects on body ("from neck down"), whereas core features up") underappreciated. Other long-held misperceptions are patients suffering from will not engage even if physicians prescribe it, only vigorous effective. Lastly, false assumption may more harmful than old age, therefore should recommended younger patients. This narrative review summarizes relevant literature address aforementioned provide practical recommendations prescribing individuals with depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental illness that affects 5 to 20% of the general population. Current antidepressant drugs exerts only partial clinical efficacy because approximately 30% depressed patients failed respond these and antidepressants produce remission in patients. This can be explained by fact complex pathophysiology depression has not been completely elucidated, treatments have mainly developed following "monoaminergic hypothesis" without considering key role other factors involved pathogenesis MDD, such as chronic stress neuroinflammation. Chronic acts risk factor for development MDD through impairment neurotrophins signaling brain-derived neurotrophic (BDNF) transforming-growth-factor-β1 (TGF-β1). Stress-induced pathology contributes altered BDNF level function and, thereby, an neuroplasticity at regional circuit level. Recent studies demonstrate aerobic exercise strongly increases production it may contribute non-pharmacological strategy improve treatment cognitive affective symptoms MDD. Here we will provide overview on possible synergism between physical activity Physical synergize with rescuing neurotrophin patients, promoting neuronal health recovery MDD-related circuits, finally enhancing pharmacotherapeutic response. might particularly relevant elderly late-life depression, subgroup increased develop dementia.

Depression is a major public health issue in numerous countries, with around 300 million people worldwide suffering from it. Typically, depressed patients are treated antidepressants or psychological therapy combination of both. However, there some limitations associated these therapies and as result, over the past decades number alternative complementary have been developed. Exercise one such option that supported by published extensive basic clinical research data. The aim this review was to examine beneficial effects exercise depression. Physical activity shown be effective treating mild-to-moderate depression reducing mortality symptoms physical still underused practice. This attempts propose framework help clinicians their decision-making process, how incorporate toolkit potential therapeutic responses for patients. We first summarize interactions between activities, particular focus on antidepressant physiological activity. then identify barriers blocking being used fight Finally, we present several perspectives ideas can optimizing mitigation strategies challenge barriers, including actions representations, ways increase accessibility activity, technology both
