Objective In recent years, there has been a significant increase in research using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to explore suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). Meanwhile, concerns have raised regarding the potential impacts of frequent intense STBs assessments on study participants. Methods From November 2021 June 2023, total 83 adolescent young adult outpatients (M age = 21.0, SD 6.3, 71.1% female), who were diagnosed with mood disorders, recruited from three psychiatric clinics China. Smartphone-based EMA was used measure times per day at randomly selected times. We examined change each measurement within 1 evaluate adverse effects Bayesian multilevel models. Results The 3,105 effective surveys nested participants (median follow-up days: 14 days). results two-level models indicated that decreased during monitoring period. However, this effect varied among different individuals model. Conclusion Our findings did not support notion repeated is iatrogenic, but future should continue investigate impact thoughts, taking into account individual differences utilizing larger sample sizes.

Abstract The use of intensive time sampling methods, such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA), has increased in clinical, and specifically suicide, research during the past decade. While EMA can capture dynamic intraindividual processes, repeated assessments increase participant burden, potentially resulting low compliance. This study aimed to shed light on study‐level psychological variables, including suicidal ideation (SI), that may predict prompt (i.e., prompt‐to‐prompt) completion. We combined data from three studies examining mental health difficulties ( N = 103; 10,656 prompts; 7144 completed), using multilevel models machine learning determine how well we prompt‐to‐prompt completion which variables are most important. two important were hours since last study. Psychological added little predictive validity; similarly, trait‐level SI demonstrated a small effect Our showed characteristics be used explain compliance rates research, highlighting potential for developing adaptive schedules improve

Abstract Background Use of intensive longitudinal methods (e.g. ecological momentary assessment, passive sensing) and machine learning (ML) models to predict risk for depression suicide has increased in recent years. However, these studies often vary considerably length, ML used, sources data. The present study examined predictive accuracy suicidal ideation (SI) as a function time, comparing different combinations data sources. Methods Participants were 2459 first-year training physicians (55.1% female; 52.5% White) who provided with Fitbit wearable devices assessed daily mood. Linear [elastic net regression (ENR)] non-linear (random forest) algorithms used SI at the first-quarter follow-up using two sets variables (daily mood features only, + passive-sensing features). To assess over estimated iteratively each first 92 days internship, available up that point time. Results ENRs only generally had best predicting mental health outcomes, within 1 standard error full day was attained by weeks 7–8. Depression could be predicted accurately (area under curve >0.70) after 14 collection. Conclusions Simpler may outperform more complex until become better specified. For studies, there limited value collecting than 2 months.

Within the ideation-to-action framework, existing theories of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) primarily focus on linear progression suicide risk. This, however, neglects growing evidence that many individuals do not experience their attempt as a planned action, in some instances deny even having experienced any thoughts. Furthermore, recent research has found risk factors differ substantially between persons this is reflected variety pathways. Importance Suicide rates among adolescents continue to rise, but there are a lack of clinical tools predict when youths may be at risk for suicidal behaviors. Objective To identify whether geolocation metrics, assessed through an app installed on adolescents’ personal smartphones, could detect the next-week events and clinically meaningful ideation. Design, Setting, Participants This case series study included high-risk aged 13 18 years reporting current affective and/or substance use disorder, oversampled thoughts behaviors (STB). were recruited from greater New York City Pittsburgh communities psychiatric outpatient programs, emergency departments, medical center research registries, social media. Effortless Assessment Research System (EARS) software application onto their which obtained passive sensor data, including metrics (via global positioning system [GPS]), as well weekly experience sampling data probing STB duration 6-month study. Adolescents also completed assessments baseline during 1-, 3-, follow-up assessments. Statistical analysis was performed March 2023 November 2024. Main Outcomes Measures Repeated measures mixed-effects logistic models estimated aggregates features (ie, entropy, homestay, distance traveled) associated with suicide attempts, hospitalizations, department visits concerns) ideation sampling). Results Overall, 186 participants in this (148 [79.6%] female; 19 [10.2%] Asian, 23 [12.4%] Black, 106 [57.0%] White), mean (SD) age 16.4 (1.7) years. Greater homestay (amount time spent home) given week, relative one’s own mean, 2-fold odds subsequent week (odds ratio, 1.99 [95% CI, 1.15-3.45]). not significant entropy traveled metrics. However, using leave-future-out validation, accuracy model modest (area under receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.64 0.50-0.78]). Conclusions Relevance Advancements smartphone technology afford unique opportunities capture behavioral dynamics that presage risk. found GPS over course event week. Although modest, these findings offer novel starting point prevention research, particularly have capacity who is while providing opportunity deliver greatest.

Abstract Objective The metacognitive model of suicidality proposes that positive metacognitions about suicide (PMS) activate a cognitive attentional syndrome (CAS), i.e., suicide-specific rumination, fixation, and thought suppression, which in turn activates negative (NMS) an aggravation suicidality. Preliminary evidence supports the assumptions; however, more comprehensive investigation is missing by now. Methods One hundred eighty-six participants (148 female [79.6%]; age M = 28.3 (SD 9.8)) with lifetime suicidal ideation filled self-report measures ideation/behavior, all CAS-components, suicide. Results All elements CAS correlated significantly each other concurrent ideation. PMS predicted rumination fixation. CAS-components NMS. Suicide-specific differentiated between attempters non-attempters. Conclusion are line warrant further studies regarding assumptions.

Considering that suicide has remained a public health challenge in South Korea since 2009, the development of real-time monitoring system for risk is urgently needed, especially those living community. The aims this study were to explore 28-day longitudinal pattern suicidal ideation, compare momentary depression, anxiety and stress between different groups, identify association ideation with indicators community-dwelling outpatients at suicide. Observational investigation. A total 50 psychiatric included herein. Those history attempts classified into high-risk group (n = 40, 80%), whereas rest low-risk 10, 20%). Real-time data on anxiety, collected from May 2021 July 2023 based ecological assessment. Each participant provided reports least three times day 4 weeks. 3195 assessment responses collected, among which 1345 highest mood intensity per selected analysis. Panel mixed-effect linear regression models examined differences high- groups elucidated separate effects each group. Momentary positively associated both these associations being higher In was more strongly depression than stress. Psychosocial ideation. Moreover, strong observed attempts. Further research larger samples should be conducted evaluate whether interventions could reduce No Patient or Public Contribution.
