Abstract Objectives Functional limitations may be associated with firearm ownership among veterans by amplifying perceptions of vulnerability and the need for security, yet their role remains underexplored despite emerging research on health-related factors influencing acquisition in this group. This study examines relationship between number functional recent purchasing a sample low-income US military veterans. Methods Data are from National Veteran Homeless Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) study, which surveyed households under 300% federal poverty level. The survey was conducted December 2022 January 2023 ( n = 1,008). were assessed based self-reported assistance needed daily tasks. Multiple logistic regression used to analyze association purchases past year, adjusting demographic socioeconomic factors. Increased positively (Adjusted Odds Ratio [aOR] 1.14, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.03, 1.26). Sensitivity using Firth Logit rare events confirmed robustness finding. Discussion Veterans experiencing greater more likely report recently firearm. These findings underscore importance addressing health needs firearm-owning through VA programs that support disabled caregivers.

Importance Firearm injury and poisoning, often by drug or medication overdose, account for most suicides among the general population US veterans. In Veterans Health Administration, largest integrated health care system in US, firearm opioid access is assessed patients at risk suicide who complete safety plans. Objective To describe self-reported, clinician-documented to firearms opioids, storage practices, distribution of cable locks naloxone, counseling on overdose veterans elevated completed Design, Setting, Participants This cross-sectional study used electronic record data from Administration December 2021 February 2023. were identified as having through routine screening with Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale Screener a plan within 30 days. A total 10 855 (28.2%) reported firearms. Approximately one-third storing least 1 each following ways: unlocked loaded (insecure), outside home locked unloaded (secure), loaded. Younger middle-aged veterans, Hispanic/Latine, male rural more likely report access. (5.3%) opioids; older Clinicians discussing 655 (98.2%) 1589 (78.6%). Only 1837 (16.9%) offered 536 (26.5%) naloxone documented accepting them. Conclusions Relevance this data, prevalence was lower than expected, suggesting underreporting underdocumentation, true at-risk population. template may have encouraged discussion risk, but acceptance gunlocks low.
