Abstract Purpose in life consists of having a sense meaning and purpose regarding one's activities as well an overall that is meaningful. This study reports comprehensive assessment the relationship with depression anxiety. A meta‐analysis (total n = 66,468, total k 99) investigated association Across samples, greater was significantly associated lower levels The mean weighted effect size between r −0.49, [95% confidence intervals, CIs: −0.52, −0.45], p < 0.001. For anxiety −0.36, −0.40, −0.32], mental health stronger for clinical populations, especially regard to Both approach deficits avoidance motivation are argued play role psychopathology, potentially limiting tendencies reducing effects Understanding may could help inform current conceptualizations these disorders improve treatment outcomes.

Wellbeing—defined broadly as experiencing one's life enjoyable and fulfilling—has been associated with lower risk for Alzheimer's disease related dementias. The mechanisms underlying this association are largely unknown. However, prior research theory suggest that wellbeing impacts health behaviors biological systems relevant to cognitive brain health. Several of these factors have also identified by the 2020 Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention, Care modifiable dementia factors. In current review, we summarize evaluate evidence associations between each 12 We found relatively consistent higher levels most factors: physical inactivity, social isolation, smoking, depression, hypertension, diabetes, hearing loss, traumatic injury, air pollution. Background: A sense of purpose in life has been associated with healthier cognitive outcomes across adulthood, including risk dementia. The robustness and replicability this association, however, yet to be evaluated systematically. Objective: To test whether a greater is lower dementia four population-based cohorts combined the published literature. Methods: Random-effect meta-analysis prospective studies (individual participant data from literature identified through systematic review) that examined incident Results: In six samples followed up 17 years (four primary two published; total N = 53,499; n 5,862 dementia), was (HR 0.77, 95%CI 0.73–0.81, p < 0.001). association generally consistent (I2 47%), remained significant controlling for clinical (e.g., depression) behavioral physical inactivity) factors, not moderated by age, gender, or education. Conclusion: Sense replicable robust predictor promising target intervention health outcomes.

Purpose in life, which is a central component of the eudaimonic paradigm well-being, has been sparsely examined adolescence. This unfortunate as adolescence characterised by identity development and key period for onset mental disorders. To inform future research on well-being purpose life adolescents, we drew factors from several fields research, including health psychological factors, explored were most strongly associated with life. Data collected sample 444 Italian adolescents (Mage = 16.30 [SD 1.50], range: 14 to 20 years; 58% girls) associations (stress, anxiety, depression, anger), traits (mindfulness, self-hate, self-inadequacy, self-reassurance, isolation), sociodemographic variables (age, sex, place birth) examined. Regression, dominance, network analyses indicated that stronger sense was lower depressive symptoms, higher levels being born Italy. Our findings suggest an important asset may protect against depression. Future longitudinal and/or experimental should examine potential protective role relation adolescent depression how self-reassurance (e.g., immigrant background) are involved.

Sense of purpose is a key construct explaining individual differences in health. However, much still unclear about how sense and health affect each other over time older age. Using four waves data from the Health Retirement Study ( N = 11,390, 50+ years old) spanning 12 years, we investigated reciprocal associations between multiple objective subjective markers (e.g., self-reported health; grip strength). Across better was associated with higher levels for all markers. Cross-lagged panel models implied 6 11 When looking at within-person (i.e., random intercept cross-lagged models), emerged as stronger predictor later than way around, changes predicting subsequent five while only two predicted purpose. Taken together, these findings further support notion that has protective effects against decline. We discuss context lifespan theory emphasize potential benefit considering target public interventions.

Abstract Objective: To examine (1) the association between purpose in life and multiple domains of cognitive function informant-rated decline, affect, activities; (2) whether these associations are moderated by sociodemographic factors, impairment, or depression; (3) independent other aspects well-being depressive symptoms. Method: As part 2016 Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol from Health Retirement Study, participants completed a battery tests nominated knowledgeable informant to rate their activities. Participants with information available on 2014/2016 Leave Behind Questionnaire were included analytic sample ( N = 2,812). Results: Purpose was associated better performance every domain examined (episodic memory, speed-attention, visuospatial skills, language, numeric reasoning; median β =.10, p <.001; d =.53). likewise decline affective activity profiles beneficial for health (median =.18, < .001; =.55). There little evidence moderation factors (e.g., depression). Life satisfaction, optimism, positive mastery generally cognition. When tested simultaneously each symptoms, most dimensions reduced non-significance; remained significant predictor. Conclusions: is across numerous cognition emotional behavioral patterns that observable others. These largely generalize demographic clinical groups well-being.

Prior research documents strong associations between an increased sense of purpose in life and improved health well-being outcomes. However, less is known about candidate antecedents that lead to more among older adults. We used data from 13,771 participants the Health Retirement Study (HRS) - a diverse, national panel study adults aged >50 United States, evaluate large number predictors purpose.
