Solar hydrogen production is a promising pathway for sustainable CO2-free production. It mainly classified into three systems: photovoltaic electrolysis (PV-EC), photoelectrochemical (PEC) system, and particulate photocatalytic (PC) system. However, it still has trouble in commercialization due to the limitation of performance economic feasibility large-scale In this review, challenges each system are, respectively, summarized. Based on summary, recent approaches solving these are introduced, focusing core components, fabrication processes, systematic designs. addition, several demonstrations systems under outdoor conditions performances upscaled introduced understand current technical level solar-driven commercialization. Finally, future outlooks perspectives practical application discussed.
