Service delivery and the role of clinical pharmacists in UK primary care for older people, including people with dementia: a scoping review

Abstract
Objective
As
populations
age
globally,
there
is
increasing
prevalence
of
multiple
long-term
conditions,
such
as
dementia,
leading
to
many
challenges.
The
burden
on
health
and
care
services,
economic
pressures,
the
necessity
for
innovative
policies
better
support
older
people
with
dementia
becomes
paramount.
This
review
explores
how
clinical
pharmacists
working
in
UK
primary
dementia.
Design
Scoping
review.
Method
was
conducted
following
framework
scoping
reviews
accordance
Joanna
Briggs
Institute
(JBI)
methodology.
search
Scopus,
EMBASE,
CINAHL,
Web
Science,
PsycINFO,
Cochrane
initially
September
2022,
updated
August
2024.
Searches
included
literature
exploring
landscape
pharmacy
services
UK,
focusing
roles
delivered,
perceptions,
experiences.
Results
A
total
30
articles
were
included.
These
detail
multifaceted
responsibilities
people.
Stakeholder
perspectives,
including
healthcare
professionals
patients,
emphasised
positive
outcomes
pharmacist
involvement,
from
reducing
other
practitioners’
workloads
improving
patient
safety.
However,
communication
gaps,
concerns
about
competence
professionals,
need
clear
role
definitions
emerged
Research
focused
experiences
underserved
groups,
or
minority
ethnic
backgrounds,
lacking.
Conclusions
implications
enhances
our
understanding
service
identifies
gaps
evidence,
emphasising
empirical
studies
cognitive
impairment
those
backgrounds.
It
provides
insights
into
what
makes
an
effective
service,
training
communication,
which
may
help
inform
international
policy

Abstract
Purpose
To
summarise
the
association
between
potentially
inappropriate
prescribing
(PIP)
and
health-related
quality
of
life
(HRQOL)
in
older
adults,
with
a
special
focus
on
those
atrial
fibrillation
(AF)
multimorbidity,
while
exploring
potential
interventions
to
improve
their
impact
HRQOL.
Methods
A
comprehensive
search
strategy
was
conducted
MEDLINE
using
PubMed
interface
August
16th,
2024,
focusing
key
terms
related
“potentially
prescribing”
“quality
life”.
Additionally,
reference
lists
included
studies
were
screened.
Only
utilising
validated
assessment
tools
for
HRQOL
or
measuring
global
self-perceived
health
status
considered.
Studies

populations

Results

articles
