HighlightsBackground and ObjectivesOrganizations can harness the power of crowdsourcing by utilizing digital labor platforms (DLPs) to enlist recruit crowd workers for effective execution organizational tasks. Apart from paid crowdsourcing, unpaid has also emerged, where volunteer are recruited contribute tasks on platform. Integrating perspectives public services motivation, uses gratification theory self-determination theory, this paper investigates translation DLP examining underlying factors driving participate in educational content DLPs.MethodsInterviews were conducted with 21 a voluntary global community understand them spend time effort contributing learning which was connected DLP. Content analysis analyze interview data.ResultsMajor themes related needs (i.e., autonomy, competence relatedness) uncovered. We found diverse motives consisting both intrinsic extrinsic motivations users voluntarily Predominately, DLPs function as help participants develop professional competencies connections. Purpose How to improve continuance commitment for platform workers is still unclear platforms' managers and academic scholars. This study develops a configurational framework based on the push-pull theory proposes that does not depend single condition but interactions between push pull factors. Design/methodology/approach The data from sample of 431 full-time 184 part-time in China were analyzed using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA). Findings results found combining family motivation with two kinds factors (worker's reputation algorithmic transparency) can achieve high workers; job alternatives autonomy) promote workers. Particularly, workers' reputations be core reinforcing both Practical implications findings suggest platforms should avoid “one size fits all” strategy. Emphasizing importance improving worker's transparency are smart retention strategies workers, whereas it equally important reinforce by enhancing doing their best maintain enhance autonomy. Originality/value expands analytical context research provides new insights understanding complex causality antecedent conditions
