Per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are often encountered with nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in the groundwater at fire-fighting military training sites. However, it is unclear how PFASs affect dechlorination performance of sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nFe0), which an emerging promising NAPL remediation agent. Here, S-nFe0 synthesized controllable S speciation (FeS or FeS2) were characterized to assess their interactions for trichloroethylene (TCE-NAPL). Surface-adsorbed blocked materials' reactive sites inhibited aqueous TCE dechlorination. In contrast, PFASs-adsorbed particles improved hydrophobicity tended enrich NAPL–water interface, re-exposed after accumulation into accelerate This PFASs-induced phenomenon allowed materials present a higher reactivity (up 1.8-fold) high electron efficiency 99%) TCE-NAPL Moreover, nFe0-FeS2 was more readily enriched interface selective than nFe0-FeS, regardless coexisting PFASs. These results unveil that small amount yet previously overlooked can favor reductions by S-nFe0, highlighting importance transportation induced remediation.

Abstract Exposure of animals and humans to PFAS through contaminated water foods pose significant threats public health. To tackle this challenge, study aimed develop edible clays that might enhance the binding, detoxification, elimination in gastrointestinal tract. Montmorillonite (CM) were amended with caffeine (CMCAF), curcumin (CMCUR), riboflavin (CMRIB), binding efficacy for a mixture four (PFOS, GenX, PFOA PFBS) was determined. In vitro studies used explore adsorption isotherms while computational simulations investigate mixture, delineate contribution each molecule determine if can contribute enhanced different mixture. vivo models ( Lemna minor Hydra vulgaris ) validate silico establish safety effectiveness these clays. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that often co-occur with heavy metals. Despite their prevalence, the mobility of PFAS in complex, multicomponent systems, particularly at molecular scale, remains poorly understood. The vast diversity low concentrations alongside anthropogenic natural underscore need for integrating mechanistic insights into sorption models. This study explores influence metal cations (Cu(II), Cd(II), Fe(II)) on adsorption four common (PFOA, PFOS, PFDA, GenX) onto goethite (α-FeOOH), a iron (oxyhydr)oxide both aquatic terrestrial environments. was highly dependent type, pH, ion concentration, surface complexation model effectively predicting these interactions. Cu(II) Cd(II) enhanced PFOS PFDA via ternary while slightly reducing PFOA GenX adsorption. Under anoxic conditions, Fe(II) significantly increased all PFAS, showing reactivity greater than those Cd(II). Additionally, organic matter mobility, although groundwater may counteract this by enhancing retention. These findings highlight key role transport offer critical behavior oxic-anoxic interfaces.
