Size and purity of metal phosphate sulfide colloids can control the solubility, persistence, bioavailability metals in environmental systems. Despite their importance, methods for detecting characterizing diversity elemental composition these complex matrices are missing. Here, we develop a single-particle inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (sp-icpTOF-MS) approach to characterize compositions individual extracted from matrices. The stoichiometry was accurately determined particles known with an equivalent spherical diameter ≥∼200 nm. Assisted by machine learning (ML), new method could distinguish copper sulfides covellite (CuS), chalcocite (Cu2S), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) 75% (for Cu2S) 99% CuFeS2) accuracy. Application sp-icpTOF-MS recovered natural samples revealed that iron (FeS) lake sediment contained ∼4% zinc impurities, whereas pure pyrite (FeS2) identified hydraulic fracturing wastewater confirmed selected area electron diffraction. Colloidal mercury offshore marine present as (HgS), geogenic HgS industrial process ∼0.08 wt % silver per Hg, enabling source apportionment using ML. X-ray absorption spectroscopy Hg predominantly metacinnabar (β-HgS) sample. determination impurities colloids, such FeS, may enable improved assessment origin, reactivity, potential.
