Grasslands are the most important land use in China and have experienced extensive degradation past few decades due to overgrazing. However, regionally viable solutions grazing intensity alleviation remained elusive date. Here, we evaluated effects of sown alfalfa pastures northern using an experiment-modeling combined approach that involved six sites field experiments five provinces DNDC modeling pasture's forage production carbon sequestration potentials marginal lands. Our results showed dry-matter yield varied between 4.5 9.0 Mg ha-1 under rainfed irrigated conditions, respectively, from 2025 2035. If half available lands were mobilized for production, these levels meant livestock on natural grasslands may drop 8-13% 20-33% conditions. also land's soil organic contents systematically higher pasture than fallow management by a big margin 8.5 9.9 g kg-1 (i.e., +79 +95%), during 2025-2035. Overall, demonstrated represents effective grassland conservation pathway over short- medium-term time horizon based current technologies.
