This study presents a sustainable treatment of perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic environments, focusing on perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), through adsorption. The employs response surface methodology to assess the influence adsorbent's synthesis parameters─specifically, quantities calcium, sodium alginate, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)─on adsorption efficiency alginate hydrogel. optimally synthesized hydrogel exhibits an average PFOA removal 94.8 ± 2.1% at 50 mg/L concentration. experimental data for closely align with pseudo-second-order rate kinetic model (R2 = 0.97) Sips isotherm 0.99), maximum possible capacity 382.1 mg/g. Hydrogen bonding electrostatic hydrophobic interactions are identified as primary mechanisms driving by high values selectivity parameters, indicative its preference even presence background river water matrix. A regenerant solution 50% ethanol 0.25% ammonium hydroxide demonstrates ∼80% regeneration capability, although it falls ∼70% after three adsorption–desorption cycles. provides insights into performance CTAB-functionalized hydrogel, showcasing uptake PFOA.
