Renewable resources, such as biogas and volatile fatty acids from organic substrate digestion, are used to generate the poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), a biopolymer with mechanical thermal characteristics comparable fossil fuel-based plastic. A double-stage fermentation was simulated for generating poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) analysing role of odd carbon on 3-hydroxyvalerate building block inclusion. Valeric acid then supplied at various concentrations 100–2000 ppm since it responsible highest 3-HV molar fraction accumulated. The recovery granules through non-halogenated extraction also simulated: methyl ethyl ketone employed solubilising granules, mixture methanol water (7:3) applied during precipitation stage. yields ranged 78% 96%, basing amount polymer entering line, i.e. 0.5 2.5 kg, content 40%mol 20%mol, respectively. lowest were finally theoretical assessment biodegradability: maximum weight loss 90% obtained containing fraction, thus confirming dependence biodegradability molecular structure.
