ABSTRACT Since rivers are adversely affected by harmful algal blooms (HABs), it is necessary to develop countermeasures through analyzing the relationship between environmental variables and HABs. This study focused on connections HABs in middle reaches of Nakdong River South Korea. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used identify those relationships. The developed three different PLS-SEM models investigate various aspects, including lagged effects factors, influences from upstream tributaries, interactions genera results revealed that magnitude had strongest relationships with nutrient concentrations, particularly 1 week prior measurement. Additionally, showed stronger concentrations compared tributaries' concentrations. Furthermore, dominant genus area, Microcystis, significant temperature However, did not find Microcystis other cyanobacteria genera. methodological framework provides valuable insight into management It allows for analysis multiple aspects factors HABs, which crucial effective water resource management.
