Urban public space faces increasing challenges due to the accelerating impacts of climate change, necessitating a paradigm shift in how cities adapt their built environments. This paper presents case study on integrating Nature-based Solutions(NbSs) with urban infrastructure, focusing design and development Oasis, modular multi-sensory furniture system. Oasis functions as adaptation tool, incorporating rain gardens manage stormwater, mitigate heat island effects, enhance biodiversity while smart features such sensors, irrigation systems, lighting, speakers, electric vehicle chargers. Through practice-based methodology, explores transdisciplinary collaboration can inform adaptive, resilient, equitable interventions. The findings demonstrate potential NbS-integrated infrastructure address complexities enhancing social, ecological, technological resilience. results, validated through an integrated checklist, contribute ongoing discussions frameworks, emphasizing multi-layered systemic approach that intertwines architecture, social innovation, multi-species design, sensory engagement reimagine for future

Objectives This study explores the use and perceptions of thermal comfort wellbeing among local community in schoolyards Barcelona that had been transformed into accessible climate shelters. Methods We conducted a qualitative evaluation through spontaneous ethnographic approach, combining 22 non-participant observations 11 with brief interviews 76 users 18 caretakers who supervised during non-school days (June–July 2022). thematic content analysis. analyzed user characteristics, wellbeing, activities differences by age gender, social behavior, additional benefits, areas for improvement. Results Adapted were mostly visited families groups adolescents higher proportion boys. Participants reported shade provided coolness comfort, vegetation offered pleasant naturalized environments, water features enjoyed their cooling capacity play opportunities. Schoolyards mainly used as places outdoor recreation socialization. Conclusion provides policymakers evidence to support transformation shelters, creating comfortable recreational surrounding urban community.

Climate change demands innovative and holistic approaches to urban design that address both the tangible intangible challenges posed by a rapidly evolving environment. This article explores necessity of transdisciplinary approach climate adaptation in spaces, emphasizing integration architecture, social innovation, more-than-human design, multisensory analysis. We examine current controversies architectural solutions adaptation. Drawing on state-of-the-art from key fields, we discuss potential Nature-based Solutions, co-creation practices, multimodal create adaptive spaces physical, emotional, needs human inhabitants. The reviews emerging frameworks case studies, including shelters, biodiversity-inclusive soundscapes smellscapes, demonstrate importance considering diverse perspectives stakeholders. By synthesizing these findings, propose an integrated framework for moves beyond traditional overlapping layers awareness, ecological diversity, cultural sensitivity.

The escalating impacts of climate change necessitate innovative urban planning and management strategies to safeguard communities against extreme weather events. This study explores the creation shelters areas with use technologies, namely a mobile application, within center Braga, Portugal. Utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) project, we mapped heat risk, assessed vulnerabilities, proposed adaptive enhance resilience through application. paper sets out explore importance creating in city city's ring road, assessing both challenges posed by opportunities that arise from implementing solutions. type aims adopt sustainable approaches Braga other territorial areas, as well more resilient face 21st century.

Passive cooling strategies were implemented in 11 school buildings Barcelona within a pilot project to improve thermal conditions. The present study aimed evaluate the intervention's impact on students' comfort and well-being at school. A quasi-experimental pre-post based mixed methods was conducted. Quantitative data collected through self-reported questionnaires administrated sixth-grade students 21 schools (11 an intervention group, IG, 10 comparison CG). authors measured changes satisfaction with indoor temperature air quality (IAQ), presence of bothering factors (temperature too high, low, unpleasant odours, lighting problems), performance. Difference-in-difference analysis conducted differences between IG CG changes. Qualitative photovoice-based sessions (59 sixth grade students) interviews (7 teachers) IG. thematic content identified three main categories: perceptions environmental conditions, environment-related health well-being, environment their reported learning. findings show positive among perceived temperature, quality, school, while suggest no significant problems, performance, relation CG. Compared CG, perceiving high significantly decreased girls, odours only boys. In qualitative assessment, participants that transformations improved visual comfort, IAQ, odours. Participants also reduction fatigue, stress, irritability, stifling sensation, as well enhanced concentration. This highlights benefits passive design for student's Mediterranean climates suggests need extend these interventions other similar contexts.
