Green technology innovation (GTI) is crucial for sustainable economic development and achieving “peak carbon” “carbon neutrality” goals. While fiscal vertical imbalance (FVI) may exert an inhibiting effect on regional GTI, the existing literature has paid insufficient attention to investigating underlying mechanisms potential mitigation strategies such impacts. Using provincial data from China (2005–2019), this study explores impact of FVI GTI through theoretical analysis empirical testing. The results indicate that significantly inhibits as validated by dynamic system Generalized Method Moments (GMM) spatial Durbin model analyses. Mechanistically, hinders altering government preferences reducing investments in environmental pollution control. Moreover, financial decentralization transparency positively moderate relationship, with nonlinear moderating effects. These findings suggest enhancing can mitigate negative effects offering practical insights harmonizing policies green transitions.
