Red Light Enhanced Nitrogen Removal Efficiency by Bacterial-Algae Biofilm Reactor in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems DOI

With the increasing application of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) in modern aquaculture production, importance water quality management has gained significant attention. To investigate impact light wavelengths on nitrogen removal efficiency Bacteria-Algae Biofilm Reactor (BABR), four RAS were built. Each was exposed to different forms red (400–500 nm), blue (600-700 red-blue mixed (1:1 ratio), and white (400-700nm). The results indicated that significantly improved comparing light. When exposing light, as carbon-to-nitrogen ratio increased from 1:1 2:1, concentrations for ammonia nitrite reduced 1.17±0.25 mg/L 0.73±0.31 0.21±0.14 0.05±0.01 mg/L. Red up-regulated abundance genes related photosynthesis metabolism. This research provided a theoretical basis technical reference efficient by BABR.
