Abstract The presence of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceutical and personal care products in many aqueous matrices have been reported. One matrix is streams wastewater, including wastewater treatment plants inflows outflows flow by-passing plants. Their persistence arises from their resistant to breakdown, hence they may remain the environment over long time, with a potential cause adverse effects endocrine disruption, gene toxicity, imposition sex organs, antibiotic resistance others some aquatic organisms exposed arrays residues products. Among techniques, advanced oxidation processes reported be better technique through which these PPCPs can degraded WWTPs. Heterogeneous photocatalysis using various photocatalyst immobilized on solid support activated carbon, graphene carbon nanotubes AOPs shown viable efficient method degradation. This because, performance most WWTPs limited since were not designed degrade toxic recalcitrant PPCPs. review highlight occurrence, concentration removal efficiency heterogeneous TiO 2 supports.

Olive stones have been widely used as a renewable energy biowaste source. As they are rich in elemental carbon (40–45 wt%), much research focussed on effectively converting olive stones, precursors, into activated adsorbents. However, only few studies concentrated summarising the various techniques to produce from stone. This article reviews undertaken production and application of an adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Various physical, chemical physico-chemical treatments remove heavy metals, organics dyes discussed, resultant adsorption capacities reported. In several cases, very high recorded. Finally, future prospects these materials adsorbents after further development work, stone-derived carbons great potential especially area organic polluted wastewaters.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on persulfates such as peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate via heterogeneous catalysts have been a research hotspot due to their outstanding performances in removing emerging organic contaminants (OCs). In this Review, we highlight the recent advances theoretical simulations for persulfate-based AOPs (PS-AOPs) using density functional theory (DFT), with emphasis catalyst properties mechanism of persulfate activation over variety (including nanocarbons, metals, metal oxides). Moreover, OCs degradation by diverse reactive oxygen species investigated computations are also summarized. The descriptors computational studies related structure–performance relationships discussed. Finally, challenges future focuses DFT PS-AOPs proposed, including evaluation properties, elucidation mechanism, especially nonradical pathway, rational design on-demand catalysts.
