This study aims to provide information on the site fidelity, residency patterns and social structures of bottlenose dolphins occurring in Gulf Taranto order supply effective indications supporting future management conservation measures species. Out 141 photo-identified individuals about 76% were re-sighted from 2 up 31 times. The fidelity analysis highlighted occurrence 20 seasonal residents, 62 visitors 59 transient that included a local population which emigration reimmigration events occurred, as suggested by residency-pattern analysis. association pattern, performed using SOCPROG 2.9, relatively low mean value overall half-weight index (0.11 ± 0.04). However, test for null hypothesis ‘random association’ was rejected temporal made with SLAR presence both extremely fluid stable associations between individuals, describing fission fusion structure certain degree organization. Moreover, cluster network showed two geographically socially segregated units. Thus, more investigations are needed development specific plan whole area is required.

The striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) is a cosmopolitan cetacean and the most commonly sighted in Mediterranean Sea. It usually appears groups of very different sizes, ranging from less than ten to more 500 individuals, although it found between 21 50 individuals. In western Mediterranean, specifically Gulf Mazarrón, S. coeruleoalba was frequently during 1042 whale-watching trips. goal this study establish spatial temporal distribution sightings along Mazarrón 2004 2014. Spatial patterns were analysed using Random Forest based Species Distribution Model estimate presence species. Twentythree variables (three geographic, one temporal, eight geomorphometric twelve oceanographic) used as predictors. Out cruises, 872 records dolphins obtained. Some variations grouping these mammals observed years 2006-2007, with an average shift size fewer individuals (3-10). This variation probably related epizootic event morbillivirus occurring those years, which responsible for abnormal rate strandings long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas). model allowed select 6 predictors morphometry sea currents, suggesting importance specific habitat offshore areas 1,000 3,000 m depth continental slope.

Levels of boat traffic in coastal seas have been steadily increasing many parts the world, introducing pressures on marine wildlife through disturbance. The appropriate management human activities is important not only to preserve wildlife, but also for local communities that depend ecotourism employment and their economy. This study presents further insight into bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) responses boats New Quay Bay (West Wales) within Cardigan Special Area Conservation. region heavily dependent tourism, regulated a long-standing Code Conduct. Based long-term dataset spanning months April October years 2010–2018, found compliance code behaviour increased positive towards boats. Dolphin individual named different types were examined greater detail. Speed boats, small motorboats, kayaks break most often, resulting higher rates negative response by dolphins. Visitor passenger formed majority area, showed than other general recreational crafts. Suggestions are made better protection population, as well role citizen science can play help achieve this goal working directly with trip recruitment observers.

In the framework of global and EU policies focused on stopping loss biodiversity process, deepening genetic variability, especially populations species identified as threatened, is crucial for defining conservation units developing appropriate strategies. This more urgent cetacean in Mediterranean because they assume a key ecological role marine food web are severely affected by numerous different anthropogenic pressures. study aims to increase information variability striped dolphin Northern Ionian Sea investigating population structure, phylogenetic relationships phylogeographic patterns using two mtDNA markers. From October 2020 August 2021, total 88 skin tissue samples were collected from free-ranging dolphins Gulf Taranto applying non-invasive technique swabbing. An acceptable amount DNA was extracted 86 used subsequent analysis conducted partial sequences 421 704 bp length cytb gene D-loop control region, respectively. addition, markers joined together compose concatenated sequence 1125 each sampled order investigate area. Genetic highlighted low nucleotide diversity high haplotypic Taranto, suggesting rapid expansion after period reduction size initial population. The analyses revealed presence at least lineages Stenella coeruleoalba Sea, one specific shared with population, confirming results already obtained local unit Taranto. point out potential problem hybridization between common which needs be further investigated. Therefore, increasing several may understanding represent useful tool support implementation future effective measures.
