Brazil, a crucial player in global climate change mitigation, faces challenges reducing its carbon emissions, of which nearly half are from land use changes. Despite potential reductions that can be achieved through halting deforestation and fostering forest restoration, setbacks environmental governance have heightened emissions. This article assesses proposes solutions for conserving restoring Brazilian biomes line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Paris Agreement by 2030. Notably, net emissions land-use forestry increased twofold 2017 to 2022 due Amazon Cerrado. Native vegetation clearing peaked at 2.8 Mha 2022, largest area since 2008. The deficit native within Legal Reserves Permanent Protection Areas must addressed restoration. Achieving SDGs 2030 demands urgent action against illegal deforestation, reinforced legislation secondary protection, large-scale restoration programs, economic incentives conservation payment ecosystem services rural landowners.

Integrated production systems composed of trees, crops and pastures have shown good results in improving soil quality the capacity to store carbon soil, being efficient mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, changes stocks organic matter fractions initial stages implementing an agroforestry system remain unclear. This study evaluated balance dynamics conducted over a decade. Total carbon, labile from particulate matter, associated with minerals inert were determined at depths 0–10 cm, 10–20 cm 20–40 cm. Soil also estimated for 0–40 depth. increased compared low-productivity pasture. The total stock last growing season (68.57 Mg ha−1) was close original under native Cerrado vegetation (76.5 ha−1). After 10 years, there positive both fractions. successional is alternative increasing non-labile matter.

Biomass burning (BB) emissions negatively impact the biosphere and human lives. Orbital remote sensing modelling are used to estimate BB on regional global scales, but these estimates subject errors related parameters, data, methods available. For example, emission factors (mass emitted by species during per mass of dry matter burned) based land use cover (LULC) classifications that vary considerably across products. In this work, we evaluate how in PREP-CHEM-SRC estimator tool (version 1.8.3) when it is run with original LULC data from MDC12Q1 (collection 5.1) newer MapBiomas 6.0). We compare results using both datasets Brazilian Amazon Cerrado biomes 2002–2020 time series. A major reallocation occurs within Brazil product, decreasing 788 Gg (−1.91% year−1) increasing 371 (2.44% Cerrado. The differences identified mostly associated better capture deforestation process forest formations Northern as forest-related LULCs decreased 5260 biome increased 1676 biome. This an important improvement PREP-CHEM-SRC, which could be considered build South America’s official inventory provide a basis for setting reduction targets assessing effectiveness mitigation strategies.
