Informal green spaces (IGSs) are vital yet under-researched urban areas that enhance biodiversity, provide ecosystem services, and improve the well-being of residents. However, lack a consistent definition comprehensive understanding their multifunctional roles has hindered effective integration into planning. The current literature review aimed to clarify concept IGSs, analyze research trends, identify further areas. Using combined bibliometric systematic analysis approach, 150 articles from Web Science database, published 1996 2024, were analyzed. identified 54 relevant documents on effects areas, revealing diverse growing body including types, distribution, socioeconomic contexts. findings indicated an increasing trend in collaborative studies, using “informal space” as official term. This proposed clear IGS, emphasizing its visibility, formal recognition, minimal management, spontaneous vegetation, temporary nature underscoring substantial environmental social benefits. Furthermore, this highlighted need for standardized definitions interdisciplinary studies fully harness potential thereby essential contribution biodiversity regulation microclimates.

Building urban green ecological network systems and increasing rural landscape connectivity are effective ways to improve biodiversity sustainability. The sources in the main area of Qingdao City (Shandong, China) were identified based on morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) combined with a conservation function assessment, corridors established structure optimized. results showed that (1) study lacked high-quality patches strong connectivity; (2) potential was composed 38 sources, 703 corridors, 284 nodes, effectively connecting suburban spaces; (3) after optimization, contained total 223 important 61 key significantly increased (4) optimal corridor width determined be 30 m. Our provided guidance for construction security patterns scientific evidence support space planning sustainable development Qingdao.
