The integration of effect-based and chemical profiling has been advocated to assess the potential ecotoxicological risks posed by mixtures present in aquatic ecosystems. However, concentrations contaminants surface waters can vary greatly over time space, making it challenging ensure risk assessment. Chemical pollution is one of the most important threats to freshwater ecosystems. The plethora potentially occurring chemicals and their effects in complex mixtures challenge standard monitoring methods.
