Road salt (e.g., NaCl) application in cold-temperature regions has increased Cl– concentrations freshwater. Removing from water is challenging because it highly soluble. This paper the first to demonstrate and characterize removal of stormwater via Friedel's (Ca4Al2(OH)12Cl2(H2O)4) precipitation (FSP), achieved by adding calcium oxide (CaO) sodium aluminate (NaAlO2). Laboratory tests were done on with FSP using a range Ca/Al/Cl ratios deionized (DI) samples impacted road salt. Even lowest doses resulted significant maximum rates for comparable 72% 84% DI water, respectively. Temporal experiments indicate that most occurred within 10 min reaction time. Potential applications demonstrated two hypothetical scenarios based well-characterized, salt-impacted lake. The scenario indicates 30% reduction mass sufficient maintain below 150 mg/L. A second an initial 300 mg/L lake concentration shows potential implementing low-flow pump treat systems rehabilitation road-salt-impaired lakes.
