Abstract Under the influence of global climate change, both frequency and intensity typhoons are increasing. This study examines impact typhoon on nitrous oxide (N 2 O) dynamics in coastal bays, which most active areas N O production ocean. Employing 15 stable isotope labeling technique, coupled with mass spectrometry analysis key biogeochemical parameters, we conducted a series five continuous cruises before (one cruise) after Chaba (four cruises) Zhanjiang Bay, semiclosed bay northern South China Sea. Our results showed that landfall led to sharp decrease concentration Bay. However, also triggered substantial water column sedimentary environments, therefore facilitating rapid recovery levels within short period. In column, typhoon‐induced enhancement situ could be attributed input nutrients terrestrial particles, creates an anaerobic or hypoxic microenvironment conducive production. Concurrently, sediment, deposition particles derived from phytoplankton blooms introduces large amount fresh particulate organic matter, further promoting findings suggest efficient nitrogen removal process, has been previously underestimated. By elucidating aspects cycle bays during typhoons, this research aids shaping policies mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by typhoons.

Anthropogenic input of excess nutrients stimulates massive nitrous oxide (N2O) production in estuaries with distinct seasonal variations. Here, nitrogen isotopic and isotopomeric signatures were utilized to investigate the dynamics N2O nitrification at middle reach eutrophic Pearl River Estuary south China. Elevated primarily via ammonia oxidation (> 1 nM-N d−1) occurred from April November, along increased temperature decreased dissolved oxygen concentration. This consistently oxygenated water column showed active denitrification, contributing 20–40 % production. The microbial generally constituted a minor fraction (10–15 %) estuarine water-air interface efflux, suggesting that upstream transport tidal dilution regulated inventory estuary.
