ABSTRACT Rapid global urbanization has a complex impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Through its direct and indirect impacts formation development, greatly influences SOC However, the extent to which affects stocks globally remains unclear. In this study, we utilized an urban–rural gradient approach assess effects of at both national scales. First, calculated intensity (UI) 1 km scale globally, categorizing into three stages: low (0 ≤ UI 25), medium (25 < 75), high (75 100). Additionally, distinguished contributions natural factors human activities analyzed land‐use changes in eight representative cities. We found following: (1) The exhibit distinct trends with increasing UI, but when is or high, increase associated decreasing (reductions 6.8% 5.4% depth 30 cm; 6.4% 3.2% 100 cm, respectively). (2) Changes are main drivers stock during urbanization. At urban intensities, reach 98% 89%, respectively. transitions closely correlated changes, particularly areas near core, across different climate zones. (3) response varies climatic water‐scarce arid climates, attention should be given negative urbanization, more targeted measures taken enhance sequestration capacity soils. This study provides valuable insights dynamic interplay between stocks, underscoring need for tailored strategies manage environments.

Implementing watershed carbon compensation under the constraint of fiscal imbalance is a crucial approach for China to achieve its “dual carbon” goals. Focusing on 257 counties within Pearl River Basin (PRB), this paper first measured and modified land use emissions, absorption, budget (LUCB) from 2005 2020. Subsequently, their spatiotemporal patterns changes before after modifications were analyzed. Finally, determined subject–object, value, priority order using LUCB as baseline mechanism that combines vertical horizontal directions was constructed. The following findings obtained: (1) At time scale, proportion construction forestland in structure increased, showed an overall upward trend (2) spatial areas with high emissions deficits mainly located lower reaches basin, whereas absorption surpluses widely distributed upper middle reaches. deficit urban municipal districts resource-based relatively serious. (3) In 2020, total amount PRB CNY −8088.61 million. number needed be paid compensated 75 182, respectively. constructed can provide reference other countries regions financial imbalances regional neutrality.

Combating climate change by increasing urban carbon storage is one of the critical issues which policymakers must address. Understanding characteristics and driving factors changes during urbanization can assist managers in formulating responsive land use policies. This study employs INVEST model to evaluate Shanghai from 2000 2020, analyzing their impacts. It analyzes transformation same period its impact on storage. Using a 1 km grid for sampling, this examines spatiotemporal distribution patterns Shanghai. Furthermore, it linear regression discuss social economic drivers influencing city. Carbon Shanghai, predominantly cultivated artificial surfaces, increased 16.78 Mt 18.40 with an annual rise 0.81 Mt. The spatial exhibited stable southeast-northwest pattern, variations dispersion between north-south east-west directions. shifted bimodal unimodal indicating overall increase. There was significant positive correlation both per capita green space area industrial output value, be attributed Shanghai’s policies development. research aids enhance
