ABSTRACT Habitat fragmentation is a pressing threat to wildlife populations, and maintenance of gene flow between populations an essential goal conservation. Resistance surfaces have emerged as important tool for modelling connectivity developing management strategies mitigate effects habitat fragmentation. However, recent studies noted inconsistencies in the factors most strongly associated with across different landscapes. Thus, replication genetic‐based resistance surface optimisation landscapes may be necessary making robust conclusions about influence environmental variables. Accordingly, represents substantive challenge opportunity field landscape genetics. In this study, we conducted replicated genetic analyses five Tennessee Kentucky threatened wetland amphibian, four‐toed salamander ( Hemidactylium scutatum ). We tested multiple hypotheses how features that could directly affect small, desiccation‐intolerant amphibians (e.g., canopy cover) influenced assessed appropriate scale at which model features. found some concordance common importance forest cover topography), but also differences—potentially owing difference variability predictors discordance effect Our work emphasises flat areas moist not bisected by roads H. conservation, our design allows us identify relationships would been missed if only using one study site.
