This study critically analyses filtration process modeling in membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology. More specifically, the variety of approaches and assumptions considered within a curated selection resistance-in-series (RIS) models found literature is assessed. Aimed to move towards good practices, basis for establishing unified framework rooted fundamentals fouling defined this work, considering classifications, dynamics, underlying processes used by different authors elucidating phenomena. Systematically analyzing these factors should be as basic step efficiently comparing performance models. involves detailed examination applied each model their interplay with involved resistances types. A lack homogeneity RIS-based has been observed. To address this, guidelines practices are proposed aimed at balancing accuracy complexity. Specifically, seven processes, six resistances, three subgroups types fouling, further divided into four or five categories guide state variables structure. Hence, facilitates understanding during exercise MBR field, not only enhance comprehensibility available models, but also help comparison, implementation, adaptation comprehensive development new ones.
