Intermittent planted filters are effective biological treatment systems designed to oxidize and purify urban wastewater at a low cost while minimizing environmental impacts. This study introduces novel adaptation of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) specifically tailored the arid climate southeastern Tunisia, with focus on optimizing seasonal performance addressing regional challenges. By integrating unique two-stage gravel-sand design, both stages which fed vertically, leveraging solar-powered operations, this research offers valuable insights into dynamics pollutant pathogen removal under extreme conditions. Through combination laboratory field experiments, demonstrated significant reductions in chemical oxygen demand, biochemical ammonia-nitrogen, ortho-phosphate, achieving efficiencies 95.2%, 96.1%, 78.2%, 100%, respectively. Notably, an increase nitrate levels filter outlet suggests favorable nitrifying conditions that may enhance plant physiological growth. The system also effectively removed 2, 1.56, 1.18 log units total coliforms, fecal streptococci, Seasonal variations, particularly air temperature sunlight duration, significantly influenced rates, higher observed during warmer summer spring months, promote growth microbial activity.
