Enhancing Psychophysiological Well‐Being Through Nature‐Based Soundscapes: An Examination of Heart Rate Variability in a Cross‐Over Study

ABSTRACT
Stress
and
psychological
disorders
are
substantial
public
health
concerns,
necessitating
innovative
therapeutic
strategies.
This
study
investigated
the
psychophysiological
benefits
of
nature‐based
soundscapes,
drawing
on
biophilia
hypothesis.
Using
a
randomized,
acute
cross‐over
design,
53
healthy
participants
experienced
either
or
reference
soundscape
for
10
min,
with
2‐min
washout
period.
The
integrated
nature
sounds
elements
music
to
create
an
immersive
experience.
A
calm
coffee
shop
without
discernible
speech
was
selected
as
represent
typical
urban
relaxation
environment.
Heart
rate
variability
(HRV)
primary
outcome,
exploratory
outcomes
including
heart
respiratory
rates,
questionnaires
assessing
affective
well‐being,
creativity,
belonging.
Results
showed
that
significantly
improved
HRV
reduced
indicating
enhanced
parasympathetic
activity.
Participants
reported
lower
feelings
anxiety
depression
increased
comfort,
enthusiasm,
highlights
multifaceted
suggesting
they
could
serve
easily
accessible
options
promoting
immediate
recovery
reducing
daily
stress
in
individuals.
