Surgical masks (SMs) are the most commonly used personal protective equipment during COVID-19 pandemic. Due to their vast use and inappropriate disposal worldwide, SMs could potentially cause serious microplastic (MP) pollution in coastal marine environments. This study aimed investigate kinetic release of MPs from polypropylene (PP-SMs) seawater evaluate chronic toxicity released copepod Tigriopus japonicus. On basis results our available relevant data, we estimated that discarded throughout year 2020 would lead >1370 trillion entering environment globally, with a rate 396 billion per day. Our also demonstrated copepods ingested PP-SMs, causing significant decline fecundity. The clearly suggest improperly have long-term domino effect on ecosystems. To minimize risk this emerging threat, better environmental management, policy, law enforcement for ensuring proper deemed be necessary.
