This study characterises microplastics in small cetaceans on the coast of Portugal and assesses relationship between several biological variables amount detected microplastics. The intestines 38 stranded dead were processed laboratory, with digestion methods adapted to organic matter each sample. influence health (e.g., species, sex, body condition) was tested all analysed species particularly common dolphins, due larger number available samples. Most individuals had intestine (92.11%), harbour porpoises revealing a significantly higher median than probably their different diets, use habitat feeding strategies. None other influenced Moreover, found should not be enough cause physical or chemical sublethal effects, although correlation microplastic ingestion plastic additive bioaccumulation cetacean tissues requires further investigation. Future monitoring biota rely improved standardised protocols for analyses complex samples allow accurate spatio-temporal comparisons.
