The harmful effects of microplastics (MPs) pollution in the soil ecosystem have drawn global attention recent years. This paper critically reviews MPs on microbial diversity and functions relation to nutrients carbon cycling. Reports suggested that both plastisphere (MP-microbe consortium) MP-contaminated soils had distinct lower than non-contaminated soils. Alteration physicochemical properties interactions within facilitated enrichment plastic-degrading microorganisms, including those involved (C) nutrient conferred a significant increase relative abundance nitrogen (N)-fixing phosphorus (P)-solubilizing bacteria, while decreased nitrifiers ammonia oxidisers. Depending types, increased bioavailable N P contents nitrous oxide emission some instances. Furthermore, regulated functional activities owing combined toxicity organic inorganic contaminants derived from frequently encountered environment. However, thorough understanding among other still needs develop. Since currently available reports are mostly based short-term laboratory experiments, field investigations needed assess long-term impact (at environmentally relevant concentration) microorganisms their under different types agro-climatic conditions.

As an exogenous carbon input, microplastics (MPs), especially biodegradable MPs, may significantly disrupt soil microbial communities and element cycling (CNPS cycling), but few studies have focused on this. Here, we assessing the effects of conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polylactic acid (PLA) MPs rhizosphere CNPS in a soil-soybean system. Abstract Microplastic (MP) pollution likely affects global soil carbon (C) dynamics, yet it remains uncertain how and to what extent MP influences respiration. Here, we report on a meta‐analysis determine the effects of microbiome CO 2 emission. We found that significantly increased contents organic C (SOC) (21%) dissolved (DOC) (12%), activity fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse) (10%), microbial biomass (17%), but led decrease in diversity (3%). In particular, increases components further promote emission (25%) from soil, with much higher effect MPs these emissions than biomass. The could be attributed opposite vs. diversity, as accumulation recruited some functionally important bacteria provided additional substrates for specific heterotrophic microorganisms, while inhibiting growth autotrophic taxa (e.g., Chloroflexi , Cyanobacteria ). This study reveals can increase by causing shifts microbiome. These results underscore potential importance plastic terrestrial fluxes, thus climate feedbacks.
