In recent times, biochars have been synthesized for multiple applications, yet the global biochar industry lacks a standardized quantitative framework assessing quality, particularly abatement of emerging contaminants from aqueous environments via adsorption. The present study establishes first its kind effort to construct Biochar Quality Index (BCQI) using five distinct agroforestry waste biomasses with application focused on adsorptive removal model sulfonamide antibiotic, i.e., sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Physicochemical attributes at 550 °C, 650 and 750 °C were quantified selected parameters. Through correlation analysis, parameter selection was executed, followed by weight derived through factor analysis (FA). BCQI scores then arithmetically aggregated ranking categorization. FA results indicate that sugarcane bagasse prepared (SCB-750) ranks highest, scoring 84.39, while rice husk lowest score 18.34. calculations further verified batch adsorption experiments SMX removal. maximum capacity obtained SCB-750 71.77% 35.09 mg g–1, respectively, 10 L–1 initial concentration 0.8 g dose. Additionally, kinetics isotherm studies along effect water chemistry operational parameters reusability investigated. On basis results, an mechanism proposed.
